to hunt in eastern carolina is a challenge to say the least.early season is hot , misquitoes add a whole different challenge to the mix. sometimes you will have storms come through to where you cant hunt for days at a time. but not today.as i stepped into the woods today i noticed a very different and wonderous place to be things looked so different from just the usual cool fall days of before. sapplings are bowing at the wait of the just recent snowfall changing the overall apperence of what i remember the small patch of woods that i hunt. now ive been in these woods enough over the pas few yrs to remember wher some of the major deer trails and funnels are.today i had to really look to where i was going in relation to where my current position is. if you bear with me im trying to paint a picture with words, due to the camera malfunction i had due to the cold. i head to the left which is southwest from a oakgrove i know, a favorit spot i headed down a known major travel route to an area that is also open has a few hardwoods and is pretty remote from any known roads. along this trail which became tricky to follow has several funnels trveling perpendicular to this route. to my discovery, i find fresh deer tracks, along side of these tracks i also find canine tracks, now if im not mistaken coyote tracks arent as wide as a beagle, and longer than a beagle. i know i couldnt have missed it by much. anyone who has spent time in the snow knows what fresh tracks looks like. i followed one particular set. i know were a group of does. from the tracks i could tell there was at least one mature doe and a couple of yearlings. the tracks from the canines amazd me, they never intersected the deer tracks, just inches on either side. as i followed these tracks they lead me through areas of draws and sadles of some area of mixed hardwoods and pines. it lead me through areas i knew but never hunted. all the while im amazed at winter's wonderous beaty thet she left us through this winter storm. all the while it was most unusually quiet except for the soft crunch of we snow under my feet. i ran into several places where you could tell there was a scuffel by the 2 species but no blood. some of the trcks that i followed had me confused, like as if the doe tried to double back . with its predator in pursuit. i followed some more till i couldnt make sence of some of the tracks. it looks liek to me that alot happened in the woods and i was just minutes behind it all. the unusual quiet , the snow covered forest you could hear the witner breeze of the storm combing through the trees.it just seemed like a wonderous and very primal place to be with my bow. i never drew down on any game today. but i feel very satisfied that i took the chance to enjoy a very unusual winter day in carolina.
