how heavy of an arrow should i use????
« on: December 29, 2010, 09:11:00 PM »
im getting some new easton camo hunter arrows (full length) and am trying to deside how much wieght i need for them. as of right now i use magnus 2 blade 125grain heads 3-5"shield cut feathers and a 9" wrap. my bow is 45# @28" but i shoot 30" draw. so my basic question is what spine should i get? and how much wieght do i need to put on them?  i want enough wieght for a pass through but not like a 10 pound anchor on the tip of the arrow.
thanks,
steven

As far as weight goes, 10grns per lb of draw weight is a good rule  :campfire:

With that nice long draw, you are most likely getting at least 50# or maybe more from the bow.  I would first try the 2016 aluminum that is going to give you a total arrow weight of around 500 gr.

I am one of those who likes my arrows to be 9-11 grains per lb. of bow weight.

The 2016's may be just what you need, but I'd lean more toward a 2018.

Ain't nothin wrong with the Magnus 125 gr. 2 blade on that shaft either. It'll shoot through deer with your bow easily.

I'm kinda with Charlie.  A 2016 at 30+ inches BOP is going to be pretty weak for a recurve (right?) at 50 lb.  A 2018 or maybe even a 2117 should work fine without being too heavy.

I would recommend keeping your arrow weight around 500-550, but whatever you choose make sure you get it tuned right and flying perfect.  When it comes to penetration and arrow performance, good arrow flight trumps all that other stuff.   :readit:

I think a 2016 would weigh around 500 grs. and give you plenty of weight for a 45# bow.I like to keep my arrows in the 9-11 gpp range.

Listen to Charlie.  and Remember "10".

Stay somewhat near 10 grains per pound of bow pull weight and you will be in the ballpark every time.

There are lots of variables involved with choosing an arrow.  One shaft may work on one bow and not as well on the very same type bow, but one having a thicker strike plate or less (or more) center cut, etc etc etc.

Get a couple each of several shafts that seem right and find the one that works best for you.

A full length 2016 would give you 339 grns + 22 grn insert + 125 BH= 486 Grns.  I think you should also go to a 2018 or 2117. You'll be around 500 grns with the 2018 and over 500 with the 2117.

Friend of mine got an old bear grizzly 45lb from his brother and it came with some 2117's.  I just knew they were too stiff until I shot it.  They fly great out of his grizzly for me at my 29" draw.  They are full length. I agree that 2016 full length is too weak.  I would get 1 2018 and 1 2117 leave them full length and see which your bow likes.  Good luck

My arrows are 416 grains this year--9.02 GPP. I'm going to try to bump that by 100 grains before April. I'll go with the next spine heavier and replace my 100 grain broadhead with 150 grains.

Using Stu's Calculator on your set-up:
Arrow: Length 32" (2" longer than draw), 2117, 125 grn BH, 3-5" feathers, 20grn insert 58.4# spine.

Bow: 45# @ 28", your draw 30", 0.0 Centershot - 57.5#

This should work very  nicely with a 546 grain arrow.

It appears to me that the 2016 would be much too light unless your bow is cut 1/16th past (minus)centershot then you are within 2 pounds of arrow spine and bow weight.

That should make your bow a little more forgiving than bows with less cut, but I'd stay with Charlie's advice.  Every time the issue comes up it looks more and more like Fred Bear and the rest of the "old-timers" were right about 8 to 10 gr per # of draw weight.  The 2018's Charlie recommended should get you right where you need to be.
