New to me Critter Getter
« on: January 02, 2011, 04:25:00 PM »
I was foolin around in my shop after church today and stumbled onto some 1/4" wingnuts.Remembering a squirrel hunt I had a few weeks ago where a bushytail ran off after gettin smacked with a 3/16x1" flat washer behind a field point, well my wheels went to turnin. Now I'm sure some have tried this but it's new to me.I ran a  1/4" drill through the threads to clear the way for field point threads,(a blunt would be fun as well).I single beveled the wing tips on opposing sides and screwed them behind a 125 gr.f/point, wings forward of coarse. The finished wing nut weighed in at 89+ gr.Field test concluded accuracy is fine at 20 yds.BTW some might ask what was behind the arrow that allowed ole fuzzy to escape, 45#@28" drawn to 30".He was 10 yds. from me clung to the side of an oak about 8' off the ground and flew an additional 10 yds. after contact!Go figure.

i have seen a lot of stuff about wingnuts , but never heard anyone mention sharpening them. always wondered why nobody did , and i think it is cause maybe they hunted over dogs.

im currently using some 3/16 hex nuts epoxied on to some cheap dowel arra's , with a nickel or two epoxied on top of the nut. each nickel is 5 grams so roughly 77 grains.

good on ya tho. i  was eyeballing some "tee nuts" , but those  buggers arent very cheap. if youre into sharpening , try googling them , they might be just what you need.

Hard to kill little guys . Go get them. Those wing nuts work great.
You can hop but you can't hide.
If it was not for rabbits I would never get a buck.
Yip yipahooooo yipyipyip.
