quick arrow nock question

I was just wondering how you install the nock with taking the grain into account. Do you install it perpendicular or with the grain?
thanks

This will be a warm, if not hot topic. Really, a search would bring you all the answers this thread will eventually generate. You could have instant gratification by reading the many old threads!

I read an arrowsmith so adamant, I now try to orient my nock perendicular to the grain. As Jim above, I've never split nor damaged a wood arrow otherwise; so maybe it's just something to talk about either way.

I cut in My nocks, so I cut across the grain. I also wrap the nocks even tho I use 11/32" shafts..

With the index with the grain. That's the way arrows are spined, so the riff, runout, what have you, is on top and bottom of the shaft.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
This is against the bow ====================
The groove would then be perpendicular to the grain.

Always read and been told to go perpendicular to the grain. You want the stiffest part of the arrow against the riser at the shot.I've made a few dozen cedars this way and always get great flight and have never had any problems with arrows breaking or anything like that.Good luck with your arrow making,it's addictive!
