Nuts Mist five times.Coyote fever.
« on: January 16, 2011, 04:31:00 PM »
Went out yesterday . First stand one comes in to my left ,did not see it until it was only 10 yards from me made a quick shot went behind it about a half mile. Few more stands nothing . The sun came out so I started playing with the fuzzies (ground squirrels. Walking in an over grown apricot orchard . I walk up on a coyote sitting looking the other way about 50 yards out. Got down and behind the other row and stared to make a stalk . Made some ground when he stood up and started to mill around . Made some lip squeeks and he looked my way and came in to range. Let the arrow goe and on the way there it hit a branch and goes up and some place far away. The coyote just stand there . I move over so I can get a cleaner shot. Shoot again but I can tell it was a bad release before it leaves the bow( a little excired)  It goes over its back. That made it move . It starts walking off . I give it some more sqeeks ,nothing Thinking its all over I give it some loud rasbbit sqeels ,nothing. It was was moving off but just walking and would stop and sniff .I started to stalk it again. Got to 60 yards . And it started to mill around some more. I treid some chicken like clucks on the rabbit call ,that got its attention. Came running in and stated to circle made two more quick shots while it was cirling me. The last shot I was so worked up i could bairly hold the bow. I gave up and watched it walk away ,it was getting dark also. Some how I found my arrows and on the way back to the truck i found the one that went into space. And on the way back got on a levy for easer walking and the coyote was shadowing me back but staying about 70 yds out in the orchard. No hair but still lots of fun.

That's highly unusual to get that many shots at the same coyote. It must have lived in close proximity to people and wasn't too afraid of you?
Coyotes around here would have peeled out into the next county after the first shot!

Good story, keep plugging away at it and you'll get him. Matter of fact, I would go back and set up a blind in that area. Do some more calling and maybe even a motion decoy and I bet you would get the perfect shot your after without being rushed or half way down on the ground. Shooting out of postion probably made a big difference in your accuracy? I can only imagine how hard it would be to try and sneek up on a coyote!

Semo it was a young one and not so smart. And the coyote around here see people all the time. I think this one never been shot at(with a gun) .Most of my calling is in orchards so the coyotes are used to the farm workers ect . Some how they can tell if you have a weapon or not. This time of year there so much food for them they do not respond to distress calls. Need to make them think theres another coyote tress passing on thier turf.

Well, I'm no expert on California coyotes, but I assume their breeding habits and roughly the time of year they do so are relatively the same?

Around here they will start to breed just about any time now and the night time serenade of yips and howls have ceased for now. Which means they are either doing it, or getting real close?
Don't ask me why they go silent for a bit during or just before their breeding season, I just know that it happens.

Which also means that right now is prime time for using challenge howls, barks, yips, and bish chirps. Early morning and late evening are best and I have real good luck with the bark..bark..howl, and follow it up with a couple of yips. They think another dog is moving in on their territory and especially the big males are very territorial right now.

Give it a try, you may be surprised to have one come charging in on ya? It sure makes for some exciting hunting action that's for sure!

They are getting ready here also been seeing scraps. Fox distress works great this time of year also. Dog death cries are also good. Theres nothing cooler than having a big male charging in on you with his tail tucked under him and his hair all fuzed up. Way better than shooting a poor deer with them big brown eyes just standing there. Just kidding on the deer Im the worlds worst deer hunter. I need to get back out there.
Semo this time of year Ilike to start out with the loud rabbit stuff to get thier attention then bring them in with the coyote stuff, mostly soft yips and barks but just a very few realy almost no calling at all mostly waiting and looking for them.

Cali Coyotes must be sooo laid back--Back here in NY if they even think you are around they disappear  like smoke!

They are not laid back This one was a young one with no smarts. Half of them will not come  to the call and if they do your only going to see some of them. But we have tons of them. They are smart but if you can get thier curiosity up or thier greed you can get them.

I would love to get a shot on a coyote with a bow. Are you using an electronic call or just mouth calls?

There slick I don't mess around with them dogs. The second you get half a chance, launch. I burned one down at a pretty good clip this season at 35yds. Ruined it's day I'd say!

I've had the best year for coyotes with a bow ever in my life this year. Killed my first ever with a bow and got it with my Bear Grizzly recurve.
I've had a total of 5 coyotes all within bow range, shaved 2 of them, killed 1, and the others just plain busted me before I could get the drop on them.

I think we will be hearing more stories about this in the future. Coyotes are spreading like wildfire all across the nation and every state has them. They are truly an amazing creature with phenomenal adaptation abilities.
