La Crosse Wisc
« on: January 20, 2011, 11:11:00 PM »
Hello all, I am strongly considering a move to the La Crosse Wisconsin area. I love to shoot trad archery, hunt, fly fish and bike ride. Anyone from that area that can tell me about the hunting. How difficult is it to find land to hunt on, bowhunt and small game, (rabbits and squirrels). Also, any ideas on outdoor ranges and clubs in the area. Thanks.
Dav

Viking to Cheesehead?  Is that even legal?

The Sparta Rod and gun club is not to far away, was the home of the traditional State Championships. I live in central Wisconsin so I am not all that familiar with the hunting in that area.Very nice part of Wisconsin. I know the biking is good.Good luck Jerry.

I have only visited the area for a few weekends and it is a lovely area, lots of trails for biking. I don't know about the hunting but if it is anything like my neck of the woods, public land is crowded and the other land is not accessable and the acres that used to be are getting leased rapidly.

Some of the best spring creek fly fishing for trout is in that neck of the woods. There's lots of farm country and people who are willing to let you hunt on their land with a bow.
It is a beautiful part of the country.

I forgot to mention 50 minutes or less is miles and miles of public land to hunt. Should be able to find something that suits you good luck. Also in Holmen( 8 miles from La crosse)is David Dywer of Dwyer bows he should be able to help you, thanks Jerry.

I went to college and lived there for 3 years. Great hunting and fishing. If you buy MN Tags you can hunt just acrosse the river on public land. If you have a boat you can hunt the islands on the mississippi river as well. I just knocked on doors and gained permission to private ground to hunt on. When I was thier most of the guys seemed more into duck and goose hunting than deer hunting!

Hard to beat Lacrosse with the Mississip and associated backwaters. Small towns up and down the river and Dave Dwyer in your backard. The unglaciated hills and valleys just can't be beat in my mind.

Good advice here!  Most peopel focuss on Duck hunting but a lot of deer hunting around.  Had a friend I used to come down and hunt Squirrles with. There are a lot! Some landowners will allow you access to hunt small game. when you have a foot in the door you mayt be able to hunt deer.

My families Farm is about an hour from there to the north east. There are numerous great places for Trout all summer long.

Good Luck.
Relax,

You'll live longer!

West-central WI is some of the finest whitetail hunting around.  Buffalo County is just north of La Crosse.  I've never hunted them, but those river bottoms should be good for a guy willing to learn them.

I'm from south of Tomah, my mom still lives on the farm that her Dad/my grandfather farmed. Some of our land has been in the family for over 125 years. If you knock on enough doors you will find places to hunt. Don't forget about the turkeys, plenty of them to chase in the spring and access is a lot easier. Good Luck in your upcoming move!

My wife's grandparents live in Tomah.  I never manage to make it up there during deer season, but keep swearing that I am going to.  It is beautiful country.  I visited Dave and Sue Dwyer in Holmen on one trip up there and bought a bow and three basket quivers from them. Great people.  Now you got me thinking...

Just north is Buffalo County.  According to Cabelas the best county in the US for Whitetails, making it the best county in the world.

All the islands in the river are public.  IF you contact me I can give you some direction.

Your not going to believe this but I'll also give you some trout info.  No good trout fisherman does that, but I kind of left the sport due to stick and string.  I used to be pres of TU, so I know of what I speak.
