Try Formby's Furniture Refinisher and a scotch brite pad.

I have done it many times. I just put them in a dip tube and fill it with lacquer thinner, which will strip most any arrow finish, and after a few minutes just wipe off the old finish. You may have to put them back in if it all doesn't come off after the first soak.

Sanding is a lot of work and may affect spine. Wear rubber gloves and keep air circulating if you are stripping the finish with chemicals.
