Arrow deciding
« on: January 23, 2011, 09:22:00 AM »
Here's the situation. Been shooting two arrows lately.

Group 1: 2117 legacy cut 30.5 with 200 on the front.

Group 2: 2018 XX75 cut 30.25 with 145 on the front.

Both groups will bareshaft to the best of my capabilities.

I seem to get better groups from group 2 but from time to time the arrow will bounce off the target. Now, this is kinda funny to me, but worries me about real life performance.

I'll be shooting BH's soon to see which arrow performs better with BH's and if there is any small changes to make to arrow length etc.

What I'm looking for are any suggestions to the arrow bouncing off the target? If this is a form issue? Maybe a spine issue? Has this hapened to anyone else?

Thanks,

Brian

Brian,

What bow are you shooting?

Both of those arrows have enough weight.  Maybe you have a hard spot in your target.

You are shooting one of those bag targets aren't you? I have 2 bag targets and arrows will bounce off of both if I don't hit it square, especially if I'm shooting at an angle towards it.
That's not an indication of how much punch your arrow has, it's the nature of the ribbons that make up the bulk inside the target. When I shoot my 3D foam targets the arrows thump with authority.
I wouldn't worry about it because it means little on real game that aren't filled with fiberglass ribbons. A sharp broad head will slice through tissue and bone just fine as long as you are keeping the mass near 10gr. per pound and put it in the boiler room you will be fine. Work on shot placement because that means more than anything else. Shoot only razor sharp broad heads and your freezer will be fat and happy.

What SEMO said.

I have had my AD Trad arrows bounce back from bag targets with my 50+# bows.  I have also had parallel shafts with good FOC do the same. Its Like SEMO, when I hit an ethafoam animal 3D target they go THUMP and stick.

Don't worry.  You are fine.

I kinda thought the same.I shoot at a bag target too. Using 45# Bear Kodiak Hunter.

I have to admit, its a little embarassing when I'm trying to tout the effectiveness of a trad bow to someone and the arrow bounces off the target   :biglaugh:

I have the woodsmans very sharp not too worried there. Placement is key to whatever your shooting.

Thanks for the help!

That happens with bag targets, you keep shooting the same spot it gets compacted there and the arrow will bounce off sometimes. It will happen to 65-70# bows too if you keep hitting the same spot.Is your target hanging or do you have it leaning against something.Bag target work best if they are hanging.
