Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge
« on: January 25, 2011, 11:45:00 AM »
I'm the new guy so I'm trying to figure this out on this board but is anyone going to the Piedmont National Refuge Hunt in April for Turkey's here in Georgia? I went last year and bow hunted there this past September...Lots of game but a ton of turkey's...I'll be there with my trusty recurve at the first hunt if I am drawn (which everyone is drawn who applies)...Its a lot of fun and just wondering if anyone else would be out there crazy enough to chase birds with stick bow? Good luck to all on the up coming season..

I'm betting you are are not the only one on this site to go after them with a stick bow....lol, good luck!! I sure someone will chime in here shortly.

I certainly don't want this to dampen your spirits.
I used to draw every year and had a lot of good times there. Lately, I've had too many hunts boogered by the run and gun guys. I quit putting in last year because of it. Seems like everytime you get one talking back to you, someone will cut you off and BOOM! Pretty frustrating.

It is a good place with alot of turkeys. If you can get way back in, you can be alone cause most gunhunters won't get off the roads but the road system is pretty extensive.

Good Luck, please let me know how you do.

The nice thing about the Piedmont is that most of the people who do draw can stop buy the BPS in Macon to get the latest call and vidio...I gave it up several years ago. but if you want to go I found the late hunt better, and try and go mid week and plan on staying all day.
Good Luck

I went last year as well I didn't hunt for myself instead I offered to let my father take his first bird...I called in 5 on the last day of the hunt and he was able to harvest one...We had that same group of birds bumped twice before by other hunters but I found that if I got there early and parked before others came in it made the hunt a bit more private...I plan on taking one myself this year since I called for everyone else to shoot last season and was unable to harvest a bird for myself... The mid week hunt was the best as far as privacy but burning the shoe leather no matter how many are there is and always will be the best way to harvest a turkey bird...I would put in for it I saw over 50 gobblers alone most two year old birds this past September while on a 4 day bow hunt with friends...In my opinion the land is so beautiful even if you don't kill a bird its worth it just to see the country...I recommend going there are enough birds and if you like me don't mind doing a little walking you can find the hot spots
