What's a flipper rest?

I've been stopping by various sporting good stores around my area and other places in my travles. I was hoping to pick up some little items like some extra flipper rests, string wax etc.... Well, no one has any of this stuff any more. Seems like the only way to go is to stick to on line shopping. The shelves in the stores are full of over draw rests for compounds and all manner of mechanical junk. This morning on my way home from work I thought I might use up a gift card I got fo Christmas at a decent sized outdoor store I get my hunting permits from. I look around and see nothing I can use. I ask the fella at the counter if they ever carry flipper rests and some other archery equipment. He says to me, "What's a flipper rest"? I just about fell on the floor.

I only looked here because I couldn't belive you really asked this question (topic headline)!
Though I only shot from the shelve I was inclined to give you an answer    :D  
Jerry - I think you really got me with this one!     :knothead:      ;)  

BTW: The clerk only used a polite form to say:
"Man, you must be almost 40 - get out of here!"    :(

Falk, I have one bow I shoot from the shelf and another I shoot a flipper.... and I am 40.
Monkey, It as not Dunkleburgers, but when I have gone there the reply is.."We are a more modern store."

Obsolescence is just the way of the society we live in - go into just about any store and try to buy something that came out two years ago, much less 20.  Never thought I'd be so thankful for the internet, but it is just about the only place to get "oldies but goodies" anymore (be it for trad archery, or any other pursuit)...

I pretty much know you are - almost 40! Because I checked in your profile what number to write - before doing so! Quite smart, not?!  :D   :D   :D

BTW: I do have a Flipper Rest II (NIP) laying in my drawers - since - ah, >10yrs. I thought that I might need it "some day"  ;)

I am not sure what is worse, having a flipper rest in your drawers, or having the same drawers on for >10 years.  LOL!!

You do know that we use the term drawers for Unterwäsche don't you??? HA HA HA!!!

Hey Brian, I am glad when I can learn some words an meanings each and every day  :)  I will keep that in mind.
It's 2 a.m. over here now and I will take "Flipper" to a little rest very soon  :D

I wonder how you were able to type a real german Umlaut 'ä' with your keyboard?! I dont wonder you know about 'Unterwäsche' at all - of course  ;)

To be honest, very few folks who work in sporting goods stores impress me with their all around knowledge anymore.  The average kid there can tell you all about the newest wiz bang Matthews compound, but could'nt identify a flipper rest if you put it in his hand.  Try asking for Zwickey broadheads and watch him vapor lock!...    :D

I happened to find a dust covered LH rubber gametracker rest on the shelf in the local sporting goods store yesterday and picked it up.

When I paid for it the kid who checked me out asked how that rest worked.  I thought he was joking, then I realized he was talking about on a COMPOUND BOW!  He didn't have a frame of reference for a simple elevated rest!

I told him I shot Traditional and tried to explain it, but I could see that vacant stare in the first minute.  The kid didn't have a clue.

And they wonder why a guy buys on line rather than locally.

Oh the blank stares that you get when you ask a "modern" salesperson for something didn't come out after 2000, or doesn't have 3 springs, 12 washers, six bolts and a recently patent pending quick detach to hold it all together. I had someone that I was teaching, and I told her to find a hoyt hunter rest because she didn't have any rest on her recurve, and her arrows were vane fletched. So she went to Bass Pro Shops were she had bought her arrows and asked the guy for a flipper rest. The guy told her not only that they didn't have them, but that they didn't exist. He said that the only thing around were launchers and other compound gagetry. She waved a printed internet page that showed that Bass pro shops did carry them, and after kind of embarrasing the "expert" archery salesperson, had him order it for him. Salespeople aren't always the highest watt light bulb.

I went to Dick's Sporting Goods in Columbia, Maryland and asked for a "Bear Weatherrest"(sp). They said they did not carry any fur clothing.

I guess I'm lucky. I can go to Gander Mountain, Dick's, Wal*Mart, Farm & Fleet or any of the local archery shops and buy stick-on Flipper rests. Everyone seems to carry them up here.

It was during a TV show show when I was alil younger when I first heard this term.
During the show's in between takes, the director would turn to the star of the show whose name was Flipper and yell "Flipper Rest".
Hence a new English term was borne.
