First Year Camping at Comptons, What Should I Bring??
« on: June 08, 2007, 11:00:00 PM »
Hey guys. I posted this in the Trad Events Forum but thought that I would get more responces here.  This is going to be my first year camping at Comptons. What all do I need to bring? Other than the obvious things (tent, bows, normal camping items). Do most people bring their own food? Can you have camp fires on your camp site? I guess if somebody could let me know this ins and outs of camping at Comptons I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Tim

Most of the camping at Compton's is essentially in a large field.  Bring the tent and sleeping gear.  Shade is sometimes a good thing so if you have some sort of nylon tarp or similar, bring it.  We are all camped kinda together, so you will likely have neighbors.  In the past, it has always been orderly and nice.  I am impressed by how well everyone gets along and respects each other.   Bring a shovel if you want a fire (to dig in a pit and bury it later).  There are currently restrictions in several states regarding bringing in firewood.  As I recall, the boy scouts or another group have fire wood there for sale.    There is a kitchen on site that makes a decent breakfast buffet each morning for a decent price.  Friday evening is a free chili (and some other things) feed for all.  Saturday night is another dinner that is cooked on site.  That one is extra (but worth it)  and you can eat there or cook your own at your tent.  If you want to eat the saturday dinner, please RSVP by e-mailing (see Compton web-site for instructions)  We typically eat both dinners and breakfasts at the site and bring lunch and snacks for food items.   Remember the chili cook off if you are so inclined.  It was fun my first year.  Plopped my chili pot on the table, turned to my left to introduce myself to the guy next to me and he stuck out his hand and said (Hi, my name is Fred (Asbell).  There are a TON of folks there and it is surprisingly orderly and nice.  I will be there with my crew. Maybe see you there.

Chuck pretty much covered it. Get there as early as possible for the camp sites. They have them marked on the size you get etc. There is definitly a ban on bringing in the firewood. But you get one bundle free last year and it was reasonable. There is a shower set up but expect to wait in line 30 minutes or so, bring a chair.

So much to do and see some folks don't even get out and shoot. If your in the market for anything to do with Traditional bowhunting bring your money or credit card.

Tim, I'm glad to hear you'll be camping at the Rendezvous this year, expect to have a great time. I'll be the first travel trailer behind the pavilion, stop by and say hi.   :campfire:

Bring your camp chair so you can sit in on the Camp Fire Conversations on Saturday evening.   :campfire:

Here's Glenn St Charles last year telling hunting stories from the days when he hunted with Fred Bear.   :archer:

Yes bring cash cause you'll want to buy everything and also a loin cloth if it gets as hot as it was last year. I'll be at the MBH booth on Saturday for a bit.
Just one more step please!

Tim make sure you bring a camera and if you have any archery related books you want signed you might want to bring them because chances are the authors will be there.

All of the above, cold beer is not bad either. Camp visitors usually don't show up with a cooler full!  :jumper:

Thanks guys.  After the St Judes auction from here I am all tapped out as far as cash goes.  I haven't missed a year in the last 4 or 5 but this will be my first year camping.  Hopefully I will get my Don Lino's cigars from Terry before this weekend.  That would be a nice addition to the campfire on Saturday night.  I look forward to seeing you all there and mostly I look forward to seeing my new SHREW that I won from the auction.  If you guys want to check it out it will be at Ron's table most of the weekend.  I am really looking forward to it and I can already tell this is going to be one long week.  See you guys soon.

Bring lots of shade, it is tough to find out in the field.  Bring some $1 bills for the aerials.
