Shrew Questions

I've been on the wait list since K-zoo 2010 and was planning on ordering a little favorite.  I really liked a SS Gold that I shot last weekend at K-Zoo.  For all you Shrew owners, How do you decide on a Model?  If you could only choose one which would you choose and why?  I draw about 27.5"  thanks, jim

You're going to get quite a variety of opinions. I shoot long bows, and have 3 (52",58", and 64"). My personal favorite is the 52" classic hunter. I got on the list  Feb. 2010, and am thinking seriously about getting a little favorite in green chamelion.

I love my SS Gold in 58 inches. For me thats as short as I would like to go. Seems short enough for most applicatins yet seems a little bit more stable compared to the shorter models. I guess what im trying to say is get the longest model that works well for you,I think it can only help your accuracy. Great bows!

First, I think Gregg will build any one you want as a "Gold" model. If I drew 27.5" I would go with a 54" Classic Hunter.

If I could only have one I would go with a 60" SS, I draw 29.75" so I like the extra length, but is still a short bow compared to my others (66-68"). The 60" is just as smooth and stable as my looooong Hill style bows.

What are the design differences between the classic hunter and SS Gold?  I'm referring to limb design and width. I realize I need to talk to Ron or Greg some more but I thought I'd get fellow tradganger's opinions.  jim

Eric, I love the look of your bow.  Why did you choose phenolic over a hardwood?  Were you looking to addd more weight to the riser?  Greg recommednded a 58" SS Gold, But mentioned if I wanted shorter he would go with a classic hunter.

Jim, the limbs are the same width on my CH and SS. The CH has more reflex in the limb and has a shorter 12" riser on the 52-54",14" I think on the 56". The SS has a 16" riser.

Yes, adds a little weight and I think phenolic is cheaper than Ebony. Those were the only 2 ways to get the black and yellow I wanted.

I draw 28" and have owned a 56 and 54 Classic and a 58 and 60 SS.  I currently own a 54 Classic and don't know why you would need anything longer than that.  To me, it's just as stable as the SS and due to the limb design or maybe it's just me, I think they are smoother on the draw.  My 2 cents.

I never had much of an wish-list for Shrew bows. Coarse I had never shot one either. I also thought I'd never find a "short" bow that I could not only handle, but shoot well...

Well you see Greg had to put some kind of "Ghost Bow" in my hand at KZoo that looked like a stealth bomber in a 56" package. It shot good and believe it or not, no hints of finger pinch or stack at 30 inches. It took a ride in my truck back to IL and hopefully will help me give a turkey or two a ride in my truck this spring.

Mike good for you.  I shot the ghost bow Friday first thing.  It is a good combination of materials and looks really nice too.

I bought a Shrew Classic Hunter 56" to see if I would like and could shoot a short longbow. It has an all phenolic riser, Ron L. knows the bow really well, it has cause a real shift in my perception of a hunting longbow.
 I have been on the list since 2/08/10 and am leaning strongly towards a shorter 54" graphite/foam and phenolic riser w/ bowbolt. I've decided that  really like the phenolic risers.

I just love the CH and want a short bow that will shoot well for me with no issue at my draw length.  I have shot a good many SS's, but after the CH it was no question.  I had a Scout and it was a fine bow, but not as nice as the CH for me.  Now I did shoot a 62" SS, and it was very tempting. I would have got it if my heart was not set on a 56" CH, and I wasn’t 12 month into the wait with no funds for two Shrews.  Your best bet it to keep shooting as many Shrews as you can until your order is up.  You probably have at least 4 or so months.

I have most models of Shrews, and the Classic Hunter is the one I like the best. If you get a Shrew with a BowBolt, there is going to be some phenolic in the riser for strength. But I love the way it looks, especially when it is surrounded by beautiful hardwoods. Even my solid phenolic riser looks good -- almost like Gaboon ebony.
