For you guys who do your own tapered lams I would like to see some pics of your sleds. I have a new Grizzly Drum sander and want to get set up to do tapers.

I can probably post a picture but it would be hard to see the taper. My sleds are 40" long and are machined out of aircraft aluminum that is approx. 5/8" thick.

I have a 8"X40" board with my taper sanded in. I took an old sanding belt and glued/stapled it to the board. I just lay my lams ontop of the sanding belt and it holds fine. I do not have any pics though.

Ric,
How do you hold your lam to the aluminum, with double sided tape?
Thanks Vince

Vince, I just contact cement some 80 or 100 grit sandpaper to the sled, making sure that it is laying flat the whole length. I only spray the cement on the back of the paper, which allows easy removal from the sled when the paper needs replacing. I forgot to mention that my sleds are 5" wide which allows me to grind 2 lams at once.

Thanks Rick!
That's a good idea to grind two at a time, did you have a machine shop build your sled, if so what did they charge you for that.
I want to try grinding my own lams as soon as I get one of these elk to co-operate with me, it's like there is an invisible fence at 30 yards! Can't quite get em close enough.

I made these grinders to taper my lams. The first one is for lengths up to ~35", the one with the belt sander for lengths up to ~70".
After that I can check the pre-tiller using my tiller stick with a detachable extra jig on top of it.

This one is for short lams.
This one is for longer lams.
