ordered some cedars
« on: February 09, 2011, 05:06:00 PM »
Hey gents, i just ordered some poc arrows 70-75 spine for my new to me longbow. It is a sovereign sonoran 54# at 28, and i draw it to 29. The bow has triple tonkin bamboo limbs and is cut to center. It ssems pretty quick and their website says 206 amo. I will be cutting the arrows to 30. Do you think 125s will be heavy enough to spine fairly close? It shoots pretty good with 29.5 fmj 400s with 200 up front and 2018s also. Thanks for all your input.

Anything over 125 may be too heavy...............I would wait till the arrows arrive and have some 100's on hand as well. You will need to see what flies best-be sure and let us know.

If it were me I'd point'em full length and shorten as you tune. I'm guessing the shafts will be 32 at full length and with FP and nock tapers they will be down to 31 or less. Cut as you go rather than cut too short too soon.

Let us know what you do and how it goes.

Yeah, sounds to me like you'll likely be spined a little light with that kinda punch out of that thing.  But, cut as you go and see what happens

I honestly couldn't tell you what a lot of my shafts spine test now.  I order them heavy and tune them till they fly correctly, then try and remember which bow they go with.   ;)

70-75# should work well with a 125 grain heads. As Bud B points out, you will lose an inch of length when you grind the point tapers, so keep that in mind when you to cut them.  If you draw 29 inches and want about an inch of shaft behind the point beyond the riser, you would want to cut them to 31 inches total.  Might try one before you cut them all. You'll gain an eighth inch on the nock end with a plastic nock.

I am no expert, but I shoot a Mowhak 54 pounds at 30 inch draw.  The bow is not center cut however, but I do shoot 31 inch arrows spined around 73 pounds with 145 heads.  They fly like darts, with my noc a bit higher than normal, real straight flight, spined just right.  So, I think you may be ok with yoUR proposed set up.

Thanks for all the replies. I have been shooting a 43# Ben Pearson cougar for quite a few years with 50# spine arrows, but it is over 40 years old and the string is dacron of course. I will let everyone know how it goes.
