Several inches of fresh snow + corn = magic!
« on: February 23, 2011, 01:27:00 PM »
The season is long over here, but winter isn't giving up just yet. We have had several snow storms this year, all with a heavy frozen crust on top. The deer have had a tough time getting down to the ground looking for food. Last week a warm spell just about opened the ground and then..... Mrs. Nature dumps a 7-10 more inches on us. It didn't take long for these folks to show up once they heard a bucket of corn being shaken up and dumped out for them. This was Monday morning. (been a little busy).

I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

Great pic! They are lovin you! But I've always heard that you have to be careful feeding deer corn in the winter. Something about how it speeds up their metabolism and makes them burn more calories. But I'm not sure if that is fact.

An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it's going to launch you into something great.

I know you mean well, but feeding deer corn when they have little else to eat can kill them.  It's called lactic acidosis, or as farmers call it grain overload.  A deer's digestive system wasn't designed for high carb food like corn.  I bet you will notice a lot of diarrhea from this.  I do when the gun season opens up here and the baiters start dumping corn.  And depending on where you got the corn you maybe killing turkeys too.  They are very sensitive to a common grain mold afflatoxin.  Some people have sold grain not suitable for livestock as deer corn that have levels that will kill birds.  Then there is the disease spreading issue too.

You don’t need to feed deer, they have survived thousands of years before we came along.  In many cases feeding does more harm than good.  And if you ask a biologist they will tell you it’s not the winter that kills them, it’s the spring.  If it comes on time even that hardest winter will have little effect.

MAT,

I'm going to have to disagree with you. Maybe the rules are different here in Ohio vs. WI. Our deer herd (and turkeys) eat corn after the corn fields are harvested. We have been feeding the deer and turkeys field corn the last 10 years once the ground is covered with snow and ice. I have never found a dead deer or seen what I would consider a sick deer from feeding them corn. I do not seen any problem in helping the deer get through tough winters by making it easy for them to eat(corn) when it is the same food they eat through out the the Fall and Winter. The deer, where I live, seek out corn fields where there is snow and ice on the ground. I would think that is a very strong statement of what they desire to eat when it is cold and nasty. I am not trying to start any argument at all. I am just stating what I have observed over my 40 yrs of bow hunting for deer. Again, this in only my opionon. We have an alot of deer hunters in the area I live in feeding the deer corn during the cold winter months. Craig

By the way, that was a great photo of the deer and turkeys.
