New bow arrow question
« on: February 28, 2011, 05:17:00 PM »
Well, it's new to me, Martin Hatfield that is 62" 61@30. I like it and it feels very good in the hand.

As I was shooting it today I was mixing some carbon with cedars and saw that my cedars were shooting very close to aim but the carbons were all grouping to the right. I decided to plug it into Stu Miller's calculator and see what it told me.

The carbons I was shooting are GT75/95, 32", 1 inch of footing weighing 13gr, 225gr heads and 3x4x 4inch fletching, total weight around 622gr. Per the calculator, the spine requirement is approx 80#, however those arrows are around 60#.

So I fiddled a bit and found that per the calculator, with 145gr up front the spine was close to correct.

So out I go to shoot them. I bring several old ones and several new ones to compare and to my suprise, I saw no discernable difference. They all grouped together (at point of aim).

I know this isn't bare shafting or paper tuning, so maybe not a true test, but I feel like these results are odd.

So, to my question- what the heck do I do and what should my arrows be build like?

My draw is 30.5 and on this bow it is right about 63#.

Thanks for your time helping an arrow dummy out-
Jethro

I don't get what you are saying.

You said the carbons grouped to the right, you changed point weights, per the calculator and now they all group together at point of aim? What is the problem?

Fletching covers a lot of ills.Check the tuning information at bowmaker.net and shoot bare shafts with the fletched.Don't mix in different arrow types.Only change ONE thing at a time.

Having fun yet? You've done more in 20 minutes than I've done in 45 years. No kidding. Carbons & woods should shoot dissimilar shouldn't they? Carbons being thinner thus faster? Best of luck. Long as you;re having fun you;re doing it right.

Re-reading my post I agree it isn't very clear, sorry, my mind was just going quick. I should have left out the part about them all grouping to the right, it seems that may have just been me.

I guess my question is what point weight should I shoot? The calculator says 145, but they shoot the same as my arrows with 225. This would represent a rather large (my opinion) difference in spine- is my bow just not picky?

Granted I am judging all this from target shooting, not paper tuning or bareshafting. I assume maybe that will help to make it more clear.
