Steel adapters bending ideas and suggestions please
« on: March 02, 2011, 01:13:00 PM »
Today I was checking my equipment before heading to the range and I notice I had a bent steel adapter again. I have been finding them alot lately and I'm looking for suggestions. It's not just missing and bending but it happens hitting arrows together in targets too. I have been shooting 160 gr snuffer and 160 grizzlies with 100 gr steel adapters. I have like the set up because it allows me to add the weight up front I like and keep the overall length between broadheads and field pionts. I us 11/32 160 gr steel field pionts and 100 gr steel adapters. It helps keep the spine the same between my broadheads and field pionts.
1. Is there a stronger adapter less prone to bending?

2. Do you think I might be better to find broadhead field piont combo that is all machined and avoid the week link altogher?

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Just shoot one arrow per target...
There is no weak link, the weak area is the "thin area" in front of the threads and the threads. By changing to all machined, you'll likely bend the broadheads altogether instead of the "comparable" cheap adapter.
There may the possibility to have "spring hardened" adapters made, but this will be pricy.
The soft steel makes them this cheap...

Let me ask you a question for your question....

Are your heads securely seated, screwed down tight, or do you find them loose?

I have been using aluminum adapters for decades and had very few bend.  I haven't bent one in years since I started using plumbing tape to keep them tight...plus I use right wing fletching that spins in the direction to keep them tight on impact with targets.

I haven't had the problem. They definitely have to be tight.

I wonder if you might have gotten a bad batch that weren't tempered properly? If you are sure you had them tight,I would be tempted to try a different batch.

there was a bad batch of Adapters a while ago that where bending and breaking right at the end of where the threads start.

More of a design flaw then anything.

Terry I keep the tips tight with wax or plumbers tape and use right wing fletchings too. I have had better luck with the aluminum adapters than the steel. The aluminum do bend but is seems to take more to do so to me. I wonder if tradtusker is right about a bad batch, they all have bent the same near the threads. I have a some aluminum adapters I can use but it will stiffen my shafts up by droping the piont weight to around 200 gr.

I also use 100 grain adapters and wanted to see how tough they where.  Direct shots into the foundation of my house.  Besides blowing the nocks off my mfx arrows, no bends anywhere in the adapter.  57# widow and 615 grain arrows.  I think you may have a bad batch.

Interseting thread!

I had a problem with aluminun inserts bending and switched to steel as well.I just cant imagine the steels bending unless it was a bad batch.

Thats a bummer, they sure have made a good arrow for me.

I have had an aluminum adapter bend on a bone hit before. Not a steel one yet.I believe Abowyer does offer titanium inserts?I have no experience with the titanium inserts personally. They come in 35 and 50 grain wieghts I think? They cost more.Might be worth it if they are stronger?I have always had concerns about adaptors after one bad experience. Its always in the back of my mind.

A swaged insert with glue on head is the best/strongest connection IMO for a hunting arrow.Hopefully its just a bad batch that your experiencing problems with!

Do you think the arrows might be hitting at an angle due to poor tuning or other reasons.  Also what is your target butt bade of, is it something that might be causing the arrow to veer one way or the other on contact and bending it like that.

Mine bend from time to time, mostly because I hit something hard, but sometimes just from continuous shooting.  When you glue a glue on head to the adapter there is not a tight, solid metal fit.  You also are shooting an 11/32 head on a 5/16 shaft.  All that pressure has to go somewhere and it does... right to the weakest part of the adapter.  If you are shooting higher foc with adapters and glue on points, and it sounds like you are, that is when you are likely to see this occassionally.

Really, its not a big deal. Hundreds and hundreds of shots and how many do you actually need to replace in a year? I shoot glue on heads on adapters with high foc and I might replace half a dozen bent adapters in a year.  I've never had any adapter bend on game.
