i have never shot one ,but i have shot straight handle lonbows before ,my osage self bow is a straight handle and can i shoot it almost as good as my glass recurve,my question is do they have any hand shock,? i have a 28" draw and im wanting to use it to hunt and shoot targets and tournaments with it,would a 62" bow be ok?..come on you hill guys let me have it..
p.s. hey mudd if i had the extra money right now i would buy that hill you got for sale..

62" too short, get a 68. Hand shock? Not that you will notice if any. Bought one now I have two, shoot em every day.

For a 28" draw I would recommend a minimum of 66" , particularly if you are going to shot field as well as hunt.

Some of them do have a bigger thump than others with a B50 string, to be bluntly honest. Some of the hand shock will depend on how you hold the bow and some on even how you release the string. A padded fast flight can take some of it away on a bow that has more kick. If hand shock is a major concern, a mild R/D will make you happier. To be again bluntly honest, I shoot them exactly the same, I enjoy the extra lean and mean bows like the Millers, Timberline and Schulz bows, but pound for pound my Robertson longbows put out a slightly quicker arrow than even the Schulz and are just as accurate for me.

For Hill bows longer is better. IMO a 68" bow would be a good fit for your draw length.

as mentioned and already referred to, a 62" hill-style longbow length is way too short for a 28" draw. you would best be served by a 68" length, instead. some folks fudge on the ratio, but for the very most part it goes sorta like this (and these are *minimum* bow ntn lengths for the given draw lengths - longer is better) ...

25" - 62"
26" - 64"
27" - 66"
28" - 68"
29" - 70"
30" - 72"

I'm also new to HH bows . I agree with Robs chart above. I shoot 27" and wasn't getting the performance out of a 68" bow. I now shoot a 66" and it works great for me. I do know guys that are 28+ and shoot 66" and love it. Best would be to call HH and get a bow sent to you to try . Thats what I did.
As far as shock, well , not sure what folks mean. A little thump maybe, but it doesn't jump from your hand as others will state. I came to a D bow from a high end recurve and don't notice it alot. IMHO

I pull 28" and shoot with a 68" length HH. I palm the grip and shoot a 23/64 barrell tapared 475 gn cedar. You get the typical bump but not hand shock. I also occasionally shoot a 68" selfbow made from Osage and this bow is what I call HANDSHOCK!!

66 to 28 i would not shoot any shorter with that design for me personally the string angle will mess with your shooting

I draw 28". My 66" osaage and bambo used to be my favorite. That was until i got my 68" Westley Special. I love that bow! Both are tuned to their arrows, so both are silent, and neither has any hand shock. Just a reasuring "thump."

IMO, you can adapt to any bow you choose. If Hill suits you, you;ll shoot it well. Sounds like you already know that answer. Suggest longer is smoother. Mudd's bow is a keeper! Make him an offer.
