Help Please...What am I doing??

I just bought "RC's"   Robertson Vision Peregrine Recurve (60" 54lb @27") and I must say that I LOVE THIS BOW. However, I have a problem...I did this to the shelf after maybe 150-200 arrows through it and I have done this to three other bows that I own. I am shooting wood arrows 70-75# cut to 28" BOP with various BH and field tips that fly very good out of this bow.   I can't figure out what I am doing?? Can anyone offer up any advice please?  Thanks,  Mark

mark i would think that those arrows would be a little on the stiff side out of that bow (she is a beaut aint she). also where is your nock point set?

Johns got it, either too stiff or your nock point needs adjusted. those narrow fifties style bows take a weaker spine then a more center shot curve.

I have shot arrows that are spined from 45-50 to 55-60 out of it and the 70-75# seems to fly the best.  As for the nock height, I have measured and didn't reset it after getting it from the seller and I am sure he has shot MANY arrows out of it.  The shelf didn't have barely a scuff on it until I got it??  I'll put something on it and try lighter spined arrows only for a while??  The lighter spine just seem to "wiggle" out of it too much.  Thanks for the feedback.  i would try some arrows spined 60-65 or 65-70, double check your nock point also i have one bow that like a nock point almost 1/4 of an inch higher than any other bow i own. you also could e-mail robertson and ask for their recomendation as far as arrows go also. hope this helps

I am about ready to switch to carbons as these darn wood arrows and their varying characteristics can drive me nuts and broke.

I use to do this to my bows. once you get the right arrows and nock set right (which you may have), try to shoot your arrows with a feather straight up. This worked great for me.

Start with one thing.   I would move the nock up first.   Judging by the wear on the rear of that shelf, I think you might need that.  

Are you building your own arrows ?  How much glue are you using on the front edges ?  Just curious.  That is a huge amount of wear in only a few hundred arrows.    

It is also located on the outside edge of the shelf, not where you might expect a normal arrow to lie.  Almost as if the feathers and not the arrow shaft are causing the wear....or, as above, the spine is too stiff which causes the back of the arrow to bounce outward by the time it gets to the shelf.

Chuck-I have bought all of my arrows from JLNFT(Joe) he is one of the sponsors. I have a variety of spines that he could attest to.  One thing that you asked stuck.."How much glue on the front edges?" Joe doesn't seem to put any glue on the front or rear of his feathers. I was in my only "local" shop and he said to put a "dot" of glue on the front and rear of the arrow and it helps to keep them in place. Well I never really had any problem with losing any feathers before I put glue on them so I figured that it couldn't hurt. I try to put a little bit on, but I have been using fletch tite and I end up with a "glob" on the front and rear of each feather.  Could this be what is making it wear?  It makes sense..I will try sanding down the glue, but am I doing any harm to the shelf?  Mark

I personaly think a 55-60# spined arrow will work best for you if you get that beauty tuned properly.  I am willing to bet most of the trouble is your nocking point height.  You just can't go by how the other guy had it set cause we all anchor in a different spot.  It could be too High, and slamming onto the shelf on the way past, or too low also hitting.  I would try setting it at 5/8" above the shelf on that bow, and give it a try.  Let me know how that works.... And No.. It's not the glue on the fletch causing the problem.

Adjust the nock point - like Deerslayer says, could be too low or too high.  Either way it will cause that type of wear.  Each archer has their own style and this affects the tuning to a great degree.  You cannot assume that because it worked for someone else it will work for you.  Nock point, spine, brace height are all individual parameters particular to the way that YOU shoot.

Southpaw is right.  I'd bet the arrows are too stuff as well. here's a little trick that will de-mystify things a bit.  Put a wipe of lipstick on the scuffed patch and shoot a couple arrows.  Check your arrows and you'll find the area that is contacting the shelf.  It's an old indian trick

Tear the feathers off of an arrow and bare shaft a few times . It will tell you a lot.I would first move the nock up some . Most of the wear from a stiff arrow in my experience will be on the side plate not the shelf.Also if you torgue the string a lot it will cause wear on the rest and the bow will seem loud.RC
