Funky Feathers
« on: March 08, 2011, 03:57:00 PM »
I've been shooting alot just getting into this game. Rain hasn't stopped me either, but now i've got funky feathers. Some are seperated (the quills I guess they'd be called) and not taking back form after drying out. not shooting bad, but look booty. any advice on making these look new again?

I use a tea kettle on my stove. The steam works pretty good.

Hold them in the steam stream from the spout of a tea pot.  Leave them in for a few seconds and then kinda comb them into place with your fingers. Do it a few times and then let them dry.   May take a couple of repetitions.  And, don't expect them to all come out like new. They'll be better than now, but not like new.  There are some ways to make them more water resistant, but if you get them wet enough for long enough, they'll mat down no matter what you've done.

Here's a tip.... when they get wet take care of them right away after you come in out of the wet. First blot excess with paper towels.
Next use hair dryer and they will pop into shape.

If you are going to shoot in the rain spray them with hairspray, or one of the commercial products for feathers.

Charlie, never thought of the hair dryer. Will have to try out. Next time I get a little wet. Thanks
