Glove issues! Need a little help!
« on: March 11, 2011, 10:47:00 AM »
Since I started shooting trad bows, I've always used a tab. Not sure why, no one around to tell me any different. A couple weeks ago I decided to get a Big Shot glove just to see if I could see any difference between a tab and a glove. And I did. The release feels so much better with the glove than the tab. BUT (there's always a but) sometimes when I begin to draw the arrow begins to lift off the shelf!! So I back down and start over. It doesn't do it all the time and I understand why the arrow is doing it but not sure what I could be doing wrong. Thought maybe being that the glove is new, I don't know! Figure you guys can help. Thanks!

Finger pinch, I use a double nock set to help prevent that.0|0 this keeps your finger from grabbing the nock. The other is to spread the fingers out a little(pointer and middle) and cant the bow a little more.JMHO

Yeah, forgot to add that I had only 1 nock point currently on the string as it was a non-issue with the tab. Also thought it could be how this glove is stitched at the tops of the fingers? I will start with putting a second nock point on it!

Rusty -
Another thing to watch for is this. With a new glove, there is a tendency to feel the string slip towards the end of your fingers resulting in a a tightening or closing of the finger tips. This alone will be the major cause of pulling the arrow off the shelf. Get a good deep hook on the string and keep the fingers locked in place, anticipating the the draw weight increase before it happens and when you get to full draw, simply relax the fingers and pull through. You'll get a perfect release every time.

I've found that brass nocks will tear up a glove. I use dental tape (floss) to locate my nocking point. It is lighter and there is no possibility of crimping the brass too tight and damaging the string.

Rusty,

I trimmed the leather above the stall stitching on my Big Shots.  Cut with Xacto or single razor, bevelled a little so that the fingers on each side of the nock don't have all the material there.  Leave a bit above the stitching to prevent pull out.  Has worked well for me going on four years and with use they have flattened (compressed) out even more.  I worked those edges over by bow hand thumb pressure with the stalls on my shooting fingers to get the seams to lay down initially.

On the trad gang DVD terry green shows how to roll the string to prevent the arrow from getting off the shelf when doing a cant bow shot. For my part I find it harder to feel my middle finger on the corner of my mouth with a tab.
An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it's going to launch you into something great.

as you start your draw, try to put more pressure on your middle finger, than the other two fingers as you draw back.

Hey thanks Rusty starting this one, I was dealing with the same scenario. I'll use the advice you garnished here also. Thanks to all.

Hey thanks guys!! Danny, ensuring a deep hook on the string so far has been a big help. Will try some of the other suggestions also. Today after I get my bush hogging done I hope to sit down on here and read the thread on tying nock points! It's a sad day when I can work on multi-million dollar aircraft but can't tie a friggin' nock point!! LOL!!

Definite takes time to get used to the new technique. Powder your finger stalls w/non-scented. Release pulling straight back from the string. Also might try not so deep a hook.
