Perfect Arrow
« on: March 12, 2011, 07:29:00 AM »
This is wierd but I figured I'd pass it along.
About a month ago I made an arrow with an EZ fletch RW jig. The nock was already glued in.
To my amazement I couldn't miss what I was shooting at and it didn't matter what position I was in.I shot several rounds each day with the same arrow and the results until now have remained the same. I started thinking the Longbow gods came to visit me!
I took 2 more shafts and fletched them the same way with the EZ and all three perform the same way.
I tried 2 other jigs from different mfgrs and set them up exactly the same as the EZ and the arrow flight changed dramatically for the worst.
I went back to the arrows fletched with the Ez and again was dead on shootingfast ,slow ,backwards etc. it didn't matter.
Now I'm not saying I hit asprins at 20 yds but I am getting real close.
Seems to me it's not how we shoot but what we shoot that makes the difference.Guess I just got lucky enough to find it.

So, what does the difference on the arrow look like?

Rob,Magic arrow Nah!, Just the perfect arrow.-can't see the difference Ben. All specs are the same on different jigs-nock positions are the same.
I guess it's like a rifle-some bullets shoot better even though the specs and powder weight are the same-

Great point! Maybe you have found the magic arrow? IMO much more important to believe in your tools for whatever reason/s suit yourself. (i.e simplicity, beauty, memories, etc). If you like Hills, Schafers, Blacktails, etc. (pick one) you'll likely shoot them well. Arrows same. Psychosomatic maybe/not?

Nah, its probably the feather... you know Dumbo needed the magic feather to fly, maybe your arrows have some magic feathers. Either way, nice shootin.

If the magic is in the jig or not, the confidence you have will take you far. Just don't let anybody sneak up and cut your hair.

If you fletch up a dozen or more arrows, and number each in sequence, then start shooting each arrow at random (no particular order), and record where each hits in the target; you will find the same arrow hitting the same area (spot) with predictable results.

Another way is to draw a cross through the target, and record the hits according to upper right, lower right, lower left and upper left. The objective is to keep the groups separate when you shoot. This does require consistent and accurate shooting at reasonable distances.

I believe there are differences in the materials from one arrow to the next, even with aluminum or graphite. It also explains why, some arrows go where you are looking, and others don't. The objective is to shoot them as a group especially when hunting. Mixing groups will result in more misses. Arrows that don't group, might shoot okay in another bow.

Ok here we go.
3 jigs were used Ez fletch,jo jan and bitz
All nocks are AAE 5/16 same weight and all are set on nock locator tool at 15 degrees and spinned for straightness.
All feathers are true flight 4 " and colored the same for all shafts.
All shafts are 2016 legacy cut on machine exactly the same
All points were weighed at 125 gr.
All 3 jigs were set exactly the same.
If you look at the finished arrows you can't tell the difference between one or the other
I made up 1 doz-4 from each jig and marked each shaft with a small dot sequence barely noticible for ID.
All arows were placed in a stand and mixed up.
Without looking at the stand, I would nock an arrow and shoot.
I did this over and over again and after a round I would check the dots on the shats to ID them.
Findings-All shot well but the EZ fletched took on a life of their own going dead to where I was aiming. It was like a strike in bowling from a perfectly thrown ball-you can feel it before it happens.
I redid the jojans with easy fletch and and it worked .I now had 8 arrows  flying the same as the original 4 with EZ fletch.
The 4 bitz arrows were close but not the same feel.
I then redid the bitz arrows with EZ fletch and now I have a doz of perfect flying arrows!
If I miss now it sure isn't the arrow at fault.
