I Will NowTell A Story.....
« on: June 16, 2007, 04:39:00 PM »
A few months ago, during a greatly troubled time,my "Brother" adkmountainken told me to "look for a package" that he would be sending me.

Several days later, the "package" arrived.....In it was a book "The Wind Is My Mother", a Redtailed Hawk feather, and a leather "Pipe Bag" containing tobacco, matches, and a BEAUTIFUL hand made "Antler Pipe" made by a very Special Person who is very dear to many of us.....Mr. Vic.

I have used this pipe several times to "send smoke" to the Great Spirit and ask for his guidence. I had told "Brother Ken" that I had a "special job" for this pipe if my good friend "Hunterdfk" got lucky.However.....David and I were not drawn for a Maine Moose permit this year, BUT.....I would still like to share a story that my "people" the Penobscot Indians have passed down.

I Will Now Tell A Story.....

One night,a family of moose was sitting in the lodge. As they sat around the fire,a strange thing happened.A pipe came floating through the door.Sweet-smelling smoke came from the long pipe and it circled the lodge, passing close to each one of the Moose People. The old bull moose saw the pipe but said nothing, and it passed him by.The cow moose said nothing, and it passed her by also.So it passed by each of the Moose People untill it reached the youngest of the young bull moose near the door of the lodge.

"You have come to me" he said to the pipe. Then he reached out and took the pipe and started to smoke it.

"My Son",the old moose said,"you have killed us.This is a pipe from the human beings.Yhey are smoking this pipe now and asking for success in thier hunt. Now,tomorrow, they will find us.Now,because you smoked thier pipe, they will be able to get us."

"I am not afraid," said the young bull moose."I can run faster than any of those people. They cannot catch me"

But the old bull moose said nothing more.

When the morning came, the Moose People left thier lodge. They went across the land looking for food. But as soon as they reached the edge of the forest, they caught the scent of the hunters. It was the time of year when there is a thin crust on the snow and the moose found it hard to move quickly.

"These human hunters will catch us",said the old cow moose."Thier feet are feathered like those of the grouse. They can walk on top of the snow."

Then the Moose People began to run as the hunters followed them. The young bull moose who had taken the pipe ran off from the others. He was still sure he could outrun the hunters, but the hunters were on snowshoes, and the moose's feet sank into the snow. The hunters followed him untill he tired, and then they killed him. After they killed him, they thanked him for smoking thier pipe and giving himself to them so they could survive. The hunters treated his body with care and they soothed his spirit.

That night, the young bull moose woke up in his lodge among his people.Next to his bed was a present given to him by the human hunters. He showed it to all of the others.

"You see," he said."It was not a bad thing for me to accept the long pipe the human people sent to us.Those hunters treated me with respect. It is right for us to allow the human beings to catch us"

Great story,thank you.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside thoroughly used up, totally worn out, with bible in hand and loudly proclaim...WOW...What a Ride!!!

It is good to see the old ways and stories passed on. I attend pow wow's every chance I get. An old fashioned Gourd Dance sure lifts the spirit.

I was told a "shirt-tail" version of this story by my mothers father when I was very young. My Grandfather was a full blood Penobscot from Maine. My Great-Grandfather was a "lobster fisherman" (and every other "fish"erman, clam & mussel digger, moose & everything else hunter) On Mt. Desert Island on the Maine coast. When my Grandfather was a boy,he used to guide tourists hiking on the Islands many sight-seeing trails, for "a nickle a day".

As for the "story".....

Call me guilty of plagerizm if you must LOL.....

Many years ago,I started collecting childrens books on Iroquois legends and lore,(my fathers mother was half Oneida, but THAT is another looooong story)and Native American animal stories.I read these stories to my sons as a way of passing along our Indian heritage,They enjoyed them very much, and I believe they helped to create a bond between them and thier ancestors.

The above story was copied from the book "Native American Animal Stories" by Joseph Bruchac. I have met Joseph and he is a wonderful author, and has writen many books about Native American stories. He is very respected for the authentiscity of his stories.Joseph is of Abenaki blood,The Abenaki and  the Penobscot are of the Algonquian people.

If you study Native American stories, you will notice that many differant "tribes" tell very similar stories. This is becuase in cases of "adoption" either of prisoners or by marrige, the people brought thier stories with them and passed them along to others.

My good friend David (Hunterdfk) and I were co-applicants on a Maine Moose permit.....It just seemed like a good story to share.....
