bow length?

I am putting together a wish list for the bow I want to have built next year.  This includes it being a T/D, cocobolo rider, sheep horn tips, moose horn on the bottom of the limbs, antler knobs, skinned in prarie rattler, and checkered grip. Im gonna go visit TFalls and see about Silvertips this summer.

My question is what are the benifits vs negatives, and how to figure what bow length to get?

I have a 30" draw length. I once had a 64" Bob Lee Signature Hunter TD recurve. After target shooting with it for an hour, I noticed it gave me a case of "finger pinch".

With that said, concerning my Blacktail recurves, when I talked with Norm Johnson and told him about my case of finger pinch and how I basically bowhunt at ground level, Norm suggested a 66" length recurve. I'm not a tall guy either, 5' 9".

Just ask the bowyer what length he recommends based on your draw length and if you bowhunt at ground level or from a tree stand.

BTW, I was curious and asked Norm what length his draw length is and he told me 30". I then asked him what length Blacktail recurve he shoots and he told me........66".

Thanks for the info. Im in W. Mt and have never even seen a tree stand that wasn't in a store. Lol. So ground level for me      

My draw length for training wheels was 29.5" , ski have to figure out my trad draw length. Im 6'1" .

Fin,I draw 29" and shoot 56" plus bows.I can't see how you could go wrong with a 60" recurve and you won't find a bow that shoots better than a Silvertip.

For your trad draw length. Get a full length shaft say 31" in length or longer. Then get a clothes pin. Attach the clothes pin to the round shaft about 7" below the end of the shaft. Make sure the clothes pin is vertical with the free end of the clothes pin pointing towards the ground. Then slowly draw the shaft to your anchor point. As you come to your anchor point, the clothes pin will hit the front of the bows shelf and slide down towards the end of the shaft. When you come to your anchor point, the clothes pin will stop. Then slowly let down and measure the distance from the valley of the nock to the clothes pin. That distance in inches will be your trad draw length.

Do this a few times to get a good average of your draw length. Your draw length distance should be very close every time.

Sounds like a nice choice on the Silver Tip.

As far as switching to Trad, make sure you don't overbow as far as draw weight.  Starting with a take down is a great idea, especially since you can go up or down in weight with getting another set of limbs.

The folks at Schaefer will help you out with bow length for sure...
