Woodsman Elite Sharp????
« on: April 25, 2011, 07:43:00 PM »
I am very very very bad at sharpening anything, so I saw in the 3 river ad and I quote " NEW hunting sharp grind by KME sharpeners. Hunting sharp right out of the pack!" Is this true? I need a 175 grain 2 or 3 blade the is razor sharp out of the box, cause lord knows I can not get it that way. all your advise is welcome, thanks.

That's for sure. Then get the carbide three blade sharpener from them, it does wonders on 3 blades and is easy to use.

I've found that two firm passes per side on a file does very well.

I can't find what you're talking about on the 3Rivers website.  Even if they do come sharp enough to hunt out of the package, they won't stay that way for long and you'll need to learn how to sharpen them at some point.  KME makes a good tool for doing that.

It is also in the 3 rivers catalog I got in the mail today.

I know I have to learn sometime, but for my first hunt I want to make sure it is right. After the hunt I will play with them and hopefully learn to get it right.

Yep!

Like you I did not inherit the sharpening gene. But it came in the box with my KME sharpener. After a bowhunter buys his first bow and set of arrows his/her third purchase should be a KME sharpener in my opinion.

I talked with Ron the other day about this.  He said KME is sharpening all the WW Elites before packaging them and sending them to 3 rivers.  What's unknown at this point is whether or not they dull at all because they are in the package and there is no protective wax on the edge.  My guess is that even if they do dull slightly, a few passes and they'd be good to go.  I'm probably going to order some and I'll let you guys know how they are.

I was just hanging out with Ron  few days ago and he was showing me what he's doing for 3 Rivers. Ron takes it very seriously whenever something is gonna be advertised as being "KME Sharp", believe me it's gonna be sharp!

BTW when I last saw Ron he was in "frankenstein" mode and coming up with more ways to help the "sharpening challenged" ........I can't let the cat out of the bag just yet, but what he has in the works right now will be well worth the wait.....stay tuned

They do indeed come out of the package very sharp. I'd like to point out that you do not need any specialized tool to easily sharpen a three blade, just lay it flat on a normal sharpening stone. I am convinced that the only reason people have trouble sharpening is that they use too much pressure. The weight of the broadhead or knife is the only pressure that is required.

I am going to buy a pack just for something to measure myself against.  The KME  IS BY FAR the best portable sharpening system known to man!

I just got one of those carbide 60 degree tools Ryan is talking about.  That is going in the pack for touch ups in the field.  Works well.

In my experience, two much pressure is probably the #1 problem with having trouble sharpening a three blade (angle being #1 for other heads), followed closely by not stropping as a final step; be it on leather or cardboard or glass or...

I got several PM's.  NO we do not sell them.  You must purchase them from 3 Rivers.
