BOP on wood arrows
« on: May 14, 2011, 10:20:00 PM »
I've just finished making my first wooden arrows now I need to cut them to length. Stu's Calculator recommends cutting it at 28.5" but I will Start at 29.5". My Question is the BOP at 29.5" is to where the taper on the shaft start or the point of the taper? I'm not talking about the field point but the end of the shaft where you use the taper tool.

Measure from the groove in the nock to where the back of the point meets the wood. Then add 3/4 to 1" depending on the type of taper tool

If you ever need to know exactly what to add, it's not too bad to figure out.
Measure the exact length of a shaft or a piece of a shaft, round numbers are easiest. Let's say we have a scrap that measures 10", end to end.
Taper one end and put on a tip, you don't need to glue it but it should be well seated just as if you were glueing it.
Now measure from the back of the point to the other end of the shaft. Let's say this one now measures 9 1/4". The difference is 3/4", that's how much extra needs to be added for that particular brand/style/model tip.

Will the length of the taper matter that much?

Your BOP arrow length can vary as much as 1/2" depending on taper lengths.
