string length

how do I determine proper string length for a old smithwick recurve that is 64 inches nock to nock measured straight across, not following the limbs, she is 35#@26

I plan on B50 flemish

someone here will give you an easy and really good answer, but if you drop in on the 3 Rivers Archery site, they have a short video which will answer your question exactly. It's a nice way to "see" the answer you are looking for.

I had a quick look at 3Rivers and he used a tape measure to follow the limbs not just straight across. Came up with a measurement of 60 then subtracted the required four inches and the string needed was 56 inches. Subtract 3 inches for a longbow. Rule of thumb from what I understand. My 2 cents worth    ;)

MT, an Ole Smithwick, might be 3" shorter!

Ask about this over on the History, Collectors forum. Very knowledgable folks, there!
