string wound too tight?
«

I have been learning to build my own flemish twist strings.
I think i finally figured it out but... It seems as if my strings always come out too long and I have them wound up pretty tight.
Is this a bad thing? What are negative side affects?

There may be a tendency for more stretch when they are wound up a lot. Don't know of any other potential problem.

Part of the learning process on Flemish strings is figuring out how long to cut the strands for the final length. With string jig variations and actual string making variations, this isn't necessarily as easy as it sounds.
Now that you've got the techniques down, string length will come next.
As for negative side effects of a heavily twisted string... it can have a bit of a spring effect. As David notes, string stretch can be more than we expect or want.

Charlie,
A rule of thumb is one twist to each 1" to 1 1/2".
If your strings are coming out too long, just shorten up on the desired length before making the second loop.

Ken, I just mad another and used the one I made for the 58" recurve bow for the 60 inch longbow.
I made another for the 58" bow, made the string 5" short and measured 8.5" from the ends and it was still a tad too long. But I am getting closer.
Now if I can figure out the twists on my first time, I will be in business.

If your string is too long, can just untwist one loop and do it over.

C-R, too much twist causes alot of concerns. As mentioned, the spring effect, alot of strech, heavier than needed string, which kills performance! And last, wasted material, $$$!
Do like Orion says, take one apart, shorten the length, say 1.5" and start agin! Keep notes of measurement, and stay consistent with them!
You'll get it, good twisting!
