Carbon Express spines??
« on: June 12, 2011, 11:28:00 AM »
Hi guys - I'm trying to understand carbon express spines - I have a pch on the way and want to set up some arrows for a starting point.  Is a cx 250 comparative to an easton 400?  They both seem to be .400 deflection.  I'm thinking a 400 (or cx250) cut to about 30" w/ a 50gr insert and 125gr head would be a good start - the bow is a widow pch 52@28 drawn to 28.  Whadda ya think?

I think a cx150 setup the way you described would do the trick, maybe upto a 145-175g pt. A 250 hasa .376 deflection, 150 is .487, if your talking about the Heritage shaft.

Carbon Express Heritage 250 spine is .373,Carbon Express Maxima 250 spine is .404.As long as you tune the arrow to your bow both will do fine. And so would the Easton 400.For me I never just cut a carbon arrow without shooting it first,I let my tuning determine the final length.I'll start with the weight I want upfront and trim and tune from their.

You are close. Depending on the string, silencers, and strike plate thickness for a few variables, you might need to go with a 100g brass insert. I shoot the same arrow out of bows with a close draw weight and bow design. No problems making that arrow work. You might be able the get the 150's, as stated, to work too. I shoot the 150's out of three bows, all r/d longbows cut to center 48-52@28 with 50g inserts. The 150's are too weak for my recurves though.

I shoot a PCH 53#s@29", and use CE 4560's. These have a spine a little over .400.
I use a 100 grain insert and a 200 grain head.
I start with full length, and cut to tune.
Hope this helps.

There are many variables, but for me based on my work with that bow and both the 150 and 250, the 150 could be real close, and I would probably have to cut it down closer to 29” for a 28" draw or maybe a standard insert.  It would be a little bit of a lighter arrow.  For a heavier arrow I would try the 250’s, but I wouldn't cut them down to fast.  Work on them cutting a little at a time and try some other point weights to make sure.  You may even need 100 gr. inserts  and/or a heavier pointto get what you want for length.

It would be best to get a test kit to try them before you get a doz. and start cutting.  Maybe find some used arrows on the classifieds to try.

I didn't find the PCH needed as stiff an arrow as I thought it would based on the calculator.

Here is a link to the Carbon Express arrow selection process. If you use the bow Weight adjustment chart, then use the arrow selection guide you will be real close to what will work. I have used it hundereds of times to help guys get set up and so far it has not been wrong.

Three years ago I shot carbons with my Tomahawk with same specs as you and I used CX150's at 30 1/4 with 100gr inserts and 125 pts. I had started with CX250's and they were way to stiff.
