what size carbons will spine 500

I have been having one heck of a time trying to find arrows to fly out of my 52# 62" Thunder Horn Long Bow.  My draw has shortened up to 28" now.  I thought 2113 were flying tolerable untill I shot in doors and could see the nock left tare.  I am a lefty.  I dug into my stash of old arrows and have settled on 2013.  Only to learn that they are no longer made.  I have a spine tester from the days before even aluminum.  There is a bit of age in both of us.  2013 spine 500 on my old tester.  What carbon arrow will spine 500?  I know that Carbon Express 40/60 are too stiff, I know that Gold Tip 35/55 are too stiff.  I am tired of buying carbon arrows trying to fine ones that will fly.

GT 35/55 are about .500 spine.  Buy some 100 Grain brass screw inserts for them and play with different field tip weights until you get good flight - it will depend mostly on how centercut your riser is.  With your 100gr screw inserts hot-glued in, try various field tips from 100 grains up to 200 grains, and you'll find one that works.  The closer to center or past center your riser is cut, the lighter the field tip you'll need. Hang in there, and ask more questions if needed.

When you find a carbon that actually is spined right for your 52# bow, you wil find it's mass weight way to light for a 52# bow. You're best off going with a stiffer arrow and front loading it until you get it to fly right....

I shoot GT traditional 35/55s, .500 spine @ 8.6 gpi, out of three longbows in 48-53# range. One is cut to center and two are +1/8". I normally use GT screw in brass weights with a std. aluminum insert, which allows for a little easier weight adjustment. My arrows are in the 29.5"-30" bop length range, and weigh out around 500-540grs.

Beman ICS bowhunter's come in .500 spine, and are good shafts, for the money imo. They only weigh 7.3 gpi, but can be front loaded to get the total weight up, giving you a decent foc as well.

Kip  a 2013 is NOT a 500 spine.

A 2013 according to the easton chart is actually .610 spine.

Thanks for the advice.  Looks like i am back to making more arrows.  Woodies are beginning to look pretty good to me now.

TDHunter, I know what Easton says about the spine of a 2013 but my spine tester is an old one.  This difference in spine testers only adds to the problem.  On my spine meter 2013 spine .500 give or take a few.  The scale on the out side of the arc says 52#.

Easton's Epic 300 spine 330 on my tester.  If i remember correctly 2117 aluminums spine around 300 and Easton shows 400 on this shaft.

I don't knowif there is a conversion formula you can use to convert my antique to Eastons but I will guaranteee you there is a difference.  The divergence increases with the increaseing spine deflection.

Yoy have to remember that if your using a standard spine tester, you are testing arrows at 26" with a 2# weight. Easton and all other carbon arrow makers use a 28" spread with a 1.96 # weight. You will need to convert the spine from 26" to 28".

To convert ATSM spine (28" 1.94lb) to AMO spine (26" 2lb) multiply the ASTM by 0.825.

.500 X .825 = .4125

.4125 AMO = 63#

I find trying to compare carbon spines with aluminum is not a good method.They are two different animals.Carbon arrows are not hard to tune and get great flight with them.Too many times guys cut them to their preferred length and then can get them to fly good.I never cut a carbon until I shoot it first.I'll pick a spine and start full length and trim and tune from there.Until I get the correct dynamic spine I'm looking for.I let my tuning determine the final length of my arrows.There are many options like heavier inserts 50 gr. and 100 gr..There are many different point weights.Screw-on weights that go behind the insert.I haven't had a bow that I couldn't get carbons to work for me,even my Hill's.Once you get carbons tuned for your bow they are a tough arrow,some tougher then others.If I want a heavier arrow I'll pick a stiffer spine and use the heavier 50 or 100 gr. inserts in my tuning.

Easton arrows makes a large selection of carbon shafts.  All of them are spined in 600, 500, 400, etc. spine.  I like the Epic and Axis shafts.

CE Heritage 90 will work or you. The 150 (500 ATA spine) will be a bit stiff unless cut them longer and lots of point weight up front. With a 28" draw I would use the 90's. Plenty of weight to safely shoot and hunt with.

Thanks for the information.  Does this  mean that being as my 2013 spine 500 on my AMO tester that I need to get a 600 spine ASTM carbon arrow as the conversion factor makes it spine 495 AMO?

a 2013 is a .610 ASTM spine...

Just don't expect carbon to behave like aluminum, it corrects much faster from paradox

beman MFX classic 500's  they come with 75 grain brass inserts, so all i do is add 125 points and you have two hundred grains at the end.  It is the best arrow I've used to date.  55lbs 64inch longbow.

Actually I forgot to mention that i use 145 grain points and 150 grain broadheads.  Seems to be just right.

Javi, Okay i am on the right track.  my AMO tester shows 2013's at 500 and when you run the formula on 610 ASTM you get .510.  finally I have figured this thing out. I have never shot such light arrows.  Old age has brought me down from 70+ @ 29" to 52-53# @ 28".  Easton ST Axis in 600 spine weighs 7.2 grains per inch.  This seems awfully light to me but as long as it is quiet i will give them a try.
