Book exchange among members?
« on: June 21, 2011, 01:38:00 PM »
Hello all,

Like many of you, I truly enjoy reading books about traditional archery, deer hunting, hunting comedy, etc.

There are tons of good authors out there, and tons of great books.

However, I have found it almost impossible to find any of these types of books at my local library.

Would any of you be interested in entertaining the idea of a member to member book exchange, where members mail the books that they have read to other members, in exchange for new ones. It would act as a sort of library swap system. After you read the book, you would send it back to the person, etc.

With the price of many outdoor books running $20+ it could really save a person a lot of money, while still allowing them to soak in all of this great material.

Thoughts?

It sounds like a good idea and I would be interested in participating BUT one issue to deal with would be the length of the "rental".

Sometimes I read a book in a week or two other times it may take me a year or longer. It depends on other things going on in life or to what extent I am enjoying that particular book.

Just because a certain book may not be "entertaining" enough for me to read straight through does not necessarily mean I do not want to finish it----someday. I have at least three books I have nibbling on for about 2 years now   :)  !

Still, a good idea but I wonder how we can deal with this issue. I would not plan to keep someone's book too long (nor would I want one of mine out too long either) but we need to define "too long".

Just my 2 cents.

BTW, I have A LOT of books and there are a whole LOT more I want to read!

If anyone has a copyu of HH's "Hunting the Hard Way", I'd love to borrow it or even buy it, especially one of the hard cover copies.  I bid on one in the auction but some guy waited until the last minute and upped my bid by a dollar.  Since I use a 'puter at the Library, I was unable to sit by until the last moment and raise my own bid.  I did get a nice knife though---which I like a lot.

Sam: Sounds like a good idea and I would be interested in this process, However, I think that more details on the process need to be put in place.I.e., What happens if the book is never returned and the exchanged book had already been returned to the other party? Some of the books may be collectors items and we need to be careful just as if we were trading bows. Just my two cents on this matter.

Its a great idea. I've been borrow some books and trading some with other members for the same reasons. I read a lot and with the cost of books it is hard to keep that up.

Maybe a small membership fee to validate someone who wants to take part. The money could go to buying more books to pass around. Idk. I agree, more details are necessary.

Also do you have to have a bunch of take part ir can anyone borrow others books to read. Etc.

I know I don't keep books, I read them and trade or sell them off to get new ones, so I don't have a library to share

Yeah. I know there are certainly a lot of issues to deal with in accomplishing this successfully.

I too sometimes take a long time to nibble away at a book.

As for swapping really nice collector books; I would say that should be avoided.

That was one of the reasons I figured this could work. Unlike a bow, the worst case scenario is that someone doesn't return a $20 book to you. A loss, but not a HUGE loss. And with this crowd here, I doubt that would be a major issue.

There is another large web site that does this same thing with mainstream books and seems to have been extremely successful in accomplishing that.
