Best time of day for froggin?
« on: July 01, 2011, 10:13:00 PM »
Frog season just opened in PA today.   :D   I've really been looking forward to taking my 5yr old son out with his little "pup" longbow. I have permission to hunt a private pond and we're all set to head out tomorrow.

Hoping for some help/advice first though...

What time of the day is best? I know that they're most active at night, but here in PA, the use of artificial light is prohibited. (besides, the point of going out is so he can get one with his bow) So when will we see the most frogs? Morning? Evening? Does it matter what time of the day? Thanks in advance!

That is the craziest thing I've heard all day. I live in Louisiana where lots of folks go frogging - AT NIGHT.

I've seen a few places where you could walk a ditch and get a few in the morning or evenings, but they won't be out in the hot middle of the day I bet.

On a good night you can catch hundreds in some places down here. Would be hard to get a mess of them in the daylight I bet.

Too bad you can't hunt in the dark with light. I bow fished frogs a lot as a kid exactly that way. Best daylight I found was first and last 2 hours of the day - but night is more exciting and the frogs less spooky.

Thanks again guys. I'm gonna head out with the boy around 4 or so. I'm new to froggin, but have learned enough about it to know that it does seem crazy that we're not able to use artificial light. Infact, it seems so crazy that I went back and looked at it again to be sure I had read it right. Sure enough, here's the direct quote from the fish and boat commision:

"Frogs:

The use of artificial light to take frogs at night is illegal.
Frogs may be taken with long bow and arrow, including compound bows, crossbows, spears or gigs. Spears or gigs may not have more than five barbs and cannot be used in approved trout waters."

Found at the following link:

It's definitely a bummer.

I've had the most success before the hottest part of the day. Early morning before noon, afternoon after 4.

He will have fun light or dark! Besides light makes for better pictures to share with us on tradgang. Good luck to you.
