I need a stiffer shaft!
« on: July 02, 2011, 03:32:00 PM »
I'm shooting Beman Classic 340 cut to 30" and they bare shaft perfect for a 220g point but, I want to shoot a 250g point and they show weak I can't shorten the shaft any more than I have. Can anyone recommend a carbon that would be stiffer? Thanks

There are a few jokes I'm holding back here.

I wish I knew more about carbon shafts to help you.

I'm sorta thinking if 220 works so well you should be just fine where you're at.

But I understand if you want more, nothing wrong with that.

Good luck!

A little extra weight at the fletch end of the arrow will make it act stiffer. Try a wrap before you fletch. A 9" long wrap will add about 12 gr. to the fletch end of the arrow. That should be enough to compensate for the change in point weight. Bare shaft with the wrap on -- you will see a difference.

I have used 30" GT 7595's which are .340.I built a set of .350 Victory V Force HV3's and though supposed to be slightly weaker, require 25 grs more point weight than the .340's,same,30" length. The Victory's just seem to run that way.I found the same thing true with the .300's.It may be because the Victory is slightly less in diam.

I believe if you go with a .300 deflection, you will need a bigger jump in point weight than you want, even with a full length shaft.

Try some Arrow Dynamics Traditionals.  They are a very forgiving shaft.  I can shoot a huge variety of head weights out of mine and they hit to the same point out to 20 yards or so.  Past that and the heavies start hitting lower.  That's out of a Black Creek Banshee, 63#@ 31". They do great with a 250 grains up front.

I do have some gt 7595s, but they aren't nearly as forgiving.

Shim out your side plate... stiffens the shaft.

Use elect. tape till you see if it works and how much needed. Measure tape, put that amount of "shim" under your sideplate. Done

Jim I would put those Victory arrows on a spine meter, I had ordered three dozen and they were not even close to the 340 spine they said - each dozen had huge variations in spine (over .400 on some), way outside what one could imagine - Made in Mexico and I like Mexico!

300s are stiffer but what is your set-up. I mean 30"arrow bop .340 with 220 up front you must be shooting over 70#s. Shawn

I shoot 340's that are 31-1/2" with 300 up front, 30" inch draw out of a 60# longbow. I agree with Shawn.
