G5 Montec Broadheads ?????
« on: July 07, 2011, 04:33:00 PM »
Has or does any body use G5 montec Broadheads through a Trad Bow , I have 2 X new packs , seems a shame to waste them . Could they be used on Elk and Mule Deer ???

Bow spec will be
54# through my Excel / Tradtech longbow limb combo
Easton Gamegetter arrows 28 1/2" with 100grn inserts , 3 x 5"feathers
100grn Montec G5
We are here for a good time , not a long time .

There're junk they will break on a hard impact. The whole tip broke on one of mine inside a whitetail. There molded in a cast, look for a machined head like WW elite VPA.

I've killed a deer with one. I got worse penetration than I was expecting.  Don't use them anymore.  Tips don't hold an edge great.  I blunted the tips with a dremel tool and use them for small game.  They do fly great, but I think that they are not as well suited for trad gear as many other broadheads are, IMHO.

They're too short to do any good when it comes to penetration.  Same trouble with a slick trick.

I have 2 friends that shoot them. They however both shoot compounds as well as traditional bows. They use them on their compounds and I have to say they work well, but one of these friends was shooting them to tune them in and they passed through his target and bent when they hit the ground. I shoot the woodsman elite 175 grain head and can honestly say I can not find a way to bend these broadheads. They are made by VPA. I believe the only difference in them is that in the lower weight versions the woodsman elite head is longer than the VPA head and has vents in it while the VPA head is nonvented "Quiet" but is much shorter giving you less mechanical advantage. I would recommend you looking into the woodsman elite, VPA, or even a snuffer.

They have a tendency to snap off at the insert.  I shot them when shooting wheels because a three blade made from machined steel didn't exist back then.

Have shot VPA terminators (200 and now 175 grs) and won't change that.  Impossible to damage and easy to sharpen...

Only broadhead I shot out of wheelie for years. Never tried them with trad gear. Im a 2 blade man now. Never tore a montec up. I found them reasonably easy to put a edge back on and shot several deer with the same head. But like I said that was all with a compound. I like the woodsmans for a 3 blade with trad gear.

Check out Stan's Phoenix bh at Red Feather Archery. They are a sponsor here. They are Teflon coated single bevel 3 blade bh that are 3:1 ratio. They are 150 grains.  I shot the Phoenix on my cedars. Though I have yet to take a deer with one, they've destroyed my targets in practice.
God Bless,
Erik

Shot a big Illinois buck with a 100gr Montec a few years ago with a compound. The shot was just shy of 40 yds. Passed through the thinner part of the shoulderblade on the near side and broke the off side shoulder barely sticking through the hide. Strength is there, but I got away from them because I was unimpressed with the bloodtrails.

I am pretty sure the Phoenix is a custom job by VPA that is single beveled.

Just like nose tissues are Kleenex,  a three blade broadhead is a VPA...
