We all like to practice our shooting flaws alone. At least I do. So when I went early to the local outdoor range today to beat the crowd and found a couple of compound archers there already, blissfully sending 300 grain arrows down range at about 285fps, I was not exactly thrilled.
After all, I was in the middle of tuning my bow and my arrows.
They turned out to be great guys, but I didn't know that yet and thought to myself:
"Great, now I get to prove the myth that trad archers can't hit a barn"
Well, one thing I have learned in life is when the challenge is not to be avoided, its best to put on the game face, buck up, and just BRING IT!!! Never make excuses in sports. Ever.
(Its better to fail trying to excell rather than fail timidly.)
I walked up to the 20 yard butt. They were curious as I nocked a bare shaft
"Whats that?"
I explained the basic concept and let fly.
Uncertain silence as the shaft hit about 6" below the spot.
I let fly another bare shaft and it too was low.
Then shot a fletched and hit the 2" bull.
Nocked another fletched and put it snug up against the first one.
"Well," I said, "thats how its done"
They were very impressed and had no idea that I had just shot a VERY good two arrows for me. And I was not sharing ;0) .
We talked awhile and I made some new friends at the range.
I did let it drop that my arrows weighed 615 grains...
