Arrow help for new bow
« on: July 12, 2011, 05:42:00 PM »
Recently got a new to me longbow through a trade. Previous owner shot goldtip 3555 with 125gr points.

I am going to buy some traditional only arrows from 3rivers.  My draw length is 28, ant the bow pulls 55-57 at that draw.

500 spine at 29-30 inches was suggested, but wanted any other opinions from anybody that may have similar specs.

I do know how to tune, just looking for a good starting point. I do want to stay with 125gr tips. Thx in advance

Look up stus calculator and give it a try.I will tell you that 3555 with 125 grain isn`t near enough gpp for that bow. With carbon arrows and a 58 lb bow I`m shooting 55/75 goldtips cut to 29 with 250 grain up front.I`d have to play with stus calculator but I don`t know that yopu can get a carbon with only 125 grain for that bow to be enough gpp.Aluminum may be the best bet.

Hey Joe, talk to Big Jim at bigjimsbowcompany.com

He has Gold Tip blems for an excellent price.  At his price you could afford to buy both the 3555 or 5575 to experiment with.

I would be inclined to shoot the 3555's but thats me.  I shoot them now and they are fantastic.

Good Luck, Jack

I love 35/55`s out of my 43-50 lb bows but I use a 145 to 175 grain tip.Anyhow ran some numbers through the calculator.Need to know more specifics but I used a generic longbow with fast flight 14 strand and +1/16 shelf.35/55 arrow with 125 grain tip cut to 29.5 inches is 412 grains and 7.2gpp.I don`t think any bowyer would warranty or reccomend such a light arrow.A 55/75 with 200 grains up front is 8.9gpp.You could still use a 125 grain tip and just screw 70 grains of weight into the inserts

The original owner probably couldn't hit too well with it because he was shooting the  wrong arrow. 5575's are the way to go. .500 spine is too light especially in a recurve

I am using a longbow, and looking at the easton chart, it falls in the 500s. I verified tonight that I am drawing 28, and pulling 55. It is not even on the edge of another bracket.

If I get 500s, at 29 inches, and do have a slight issue, would it be close enough that I could fix just by adding weight to the tips?

Just learning. I know hkow to tune, just still getting a feel for the cause and affect

I shot 500 spine from my 63# great northern longbow and they shot perfect... GT 55/75 shot good at full length.. I would go with 500s

No,that would weaken the spine further.

So, what then?

Get 400s, and play with tip weight?

Actually, I believe I am just going to get the test kit. I would still like to hear thoughts. Always looking to learn
