New guy and a list of questions
« on: July 20, 2011, 10:49:00 PM »
Alright well I will be returning to trad archery as soon as I return to Indiana and I have some simple questions. I did some searching but I dont fully understand what im getting into to be perfectly honest(mostly overwhelmed with info). I will be shooting a '71 Bear Kodiak Hunter Recurve it is a 60" AMO I believe and is 50#@28". Now to start things off I will need to get some arrows and possibly a new string. First off the arrows, I'm looking into the traditional only carbon test kits to start off. My draw length is 28.5" from what i can remember(I will double check when I get back). My first question is what test kit from 3 rivers to get? I was thinking the Test Kit B: 300, 340, 400. I was thinking this based on that I want to shoot a heavy arrow...Im gonna do 125 zwickey eskimo with a steel 125 adapter and a brass insert...not sure of weight..maybe a 50gr. I will also be using a weighting rod through the carbon shaft...maybe a 3 or 5 gpi....now I know I will have to tune them and Im not sure what arrow length I will settle on...but hopefully that will bring the spine down for a heavy shaft on the 50# bow...any info? I will also be looking into A-Bowyer bhs as well...but have liked the eskimos since i first looked at them...and I prolly wont hunt till spring soo it will give me time to save some extra cash. I know I dont need a heavy arrow but it wont hurt any to shoot one...also is say a 650-725 gr arrow to much for a 50# recurve? Im guessing not but I'm new and have been wrong before. Also what flemish string should I order for that bow? I was shooting a endless loop but want to shoot flemish as down the road it will give me one more thing to entertain me with making. Also I want to shoot low pro banana cut feathers and was thinking a right wing right helical fletch...i see some people shoot right handed but shoot left wing left helical, is there a reason for that? I also want to try wood arrows, maybe try that once I tune up some carbons. Any good way to search for info on wood arrows? While I am thinking about it I'm not sure what style I shoot either...my first finger is above the arrow nock with my middle and ring below the nock, pinky is curled and does nothing really. this is split finger correct? Also for a anchor I use my ring finger in the corner of my mouth and my thumb knuckle is under my ear lobe for a secondary anchor point.

I would go with test kit A. I shoot traditional only 500s out of everything from 45# recurves to 65# longbows by changing point wieght. 650 gr is pretty heavy, but you will have a very hard hitting and quiet setup at 13 gpp. and yes you shoot split finger.

thanks giff if I go with 3gpi weight tube i end up with a 633.5 gr arrow...assuming i leave the arrow shaft at 29.5" or a 692.5gr arrow with the 5gpi weight tube still at 29.5"...what length arrow shafts are around average for a 28.5" draw?Would a 29.5" arrow shaft be long or short?

I just started shooting a 48# longbow, at my 31" draw.  I decided to shoot some 2216 aluminum shafts (pretty stiff), and ended up with an arrow weight around 725 grains, if I remember right.  Yes, that's really heavy, but I must say, my bow is super quiet.  (I'll probably end up going to some other shafts someday, but I have several dozen uncut 2216 shafts that I wanted to use up.)  The arrow is slow, and thus drops pretty fast.  But it shoots accurate for me, and will work just fine for hunting local deer.
Life is a whole lot easier when you just plow around the stump.

I agree with Giff.  .300 and .340 would be way too stiff for your set up.  .400 might work if you load it up as described.  A 650-725 grain arrow won't hurt the bow, but it will be a rather slow arrow.  Don't really need that much weight for deer size critters.  You might find 550-600 grain arrows more pleasurable to shoot.

yea I wont mind a slow arrow as im going to limit myself to 15 maybe 20 yds....i think the 633.5 gr arrow will be the way to go....maybe ill get the test kit that has all of them '=/

I would not recommend an arrow that heavy for that much poundage. I shoot a 53 pound hybrid longbow with a 600 grain carbon arrow. It is plenty heavy and still has a little speed to help with deer ducking the string. Also for that old of a bow make sure to get a B50 string, fast flight or any of the new materials will destroy the bow.
