Sanded nocks....accuracy..
« on: July 24, 2011, 10:50:00 PM »
Don't know if you remember or not but my nocks were fitting my string too tight but I was shooting fairly well and getting good arrow flight.  Well....about 3 weeks ago I decided to sand the throat of the nocks to loosen their grip on the sting thinking I'd improve my arrow flight and make my accuracy even better.  Well....the result for some reason was my groups got wider and arrow flight degraded.  So I got another set of identical arrows ordered...wanted them for the 3D shoot I went to Saturday morning but they didn't show up until Saturday afternoon.  I got em out today and like majic I'm back to shooting 4 inch groups at 20 yards and my arrow flight is back to what it was.  Only thing I can think of is that I might not have gotten them sanded evenly....what's your thought?

I need to buy a fletching jig and the rest of the tools I need to build my own arrows so I can experiment a bit cheaper.

Do you use a double nock?  If not, with the looser fit, the arrow was probably sliding down the string upon release.

Hmmmm...interesting thought.  Hadn't considered that possibility.

Sometimes the internet can be your worse enemy...  :D

Although I think I'd have just replaced the nocks after I ruined them instead of buying new arrows.

Yeah..but I was having a hard time believing I'd ruined them....plus that 3D shoot I was telling you about was going to be my first with trad tackle and first of any kind in about 7 years.  Wanted more arrows in case I lost the 6 I had.  Turns out I only lost one and it was on an 80 plus yard novelty shoot.  I know where that arrow is but there's so much poison ivy behind that elk that I just "donated" the arrow.

I'll bet that's it.  Get some dental floss and tie a lower nock on.  Leave a little gap, just big enough that it doesn't pinch the nock at full draw. Let us know if that works.

Just be sure those sanded nocks aren't too loose. You want them to hang on the string with their own weight and come off with a light tap.

I have worked on lots of them with a fingernail file to get the fit I wanted. Never had a problem. I do use a double nocking point, dental floss.
