Roger Rothhaar...
« on: July 26, 2011, 09:21:00 PM »
Last fall I was in need of some new reading material.  I've always been a big fan of Roger Rothhaar's and consider his "Whitetail Magic" book the best in my collection.  I wanted to see if I could get a copy of Roger's first book "In Pursuit of Trophy Whitetails" so I sent Ryan a message on the board here.  I was just hoping to get an address to write Roger and hopefully order a book if he had any in print but to my surprise Ryan was nice enough to give me Roger's home phone number which I wasn't expecting.  I waited until after the season ended and during the winter months called the number Ryan had given me.  Roger answered the phone and we spent the next hour and a half talking whitetails!  It was a great conversation and it was almost like I had known him for years!  I received my new book a week after talking with Roger and have read it several times since.  He was even nice enough to include some photos of some of the bucks he's taken along with trail cam photos of some of them.  Another side note...When I asked Roger how much I owed him for the book I was a little hesitant figuring since they are out of print and somewhat of a collector's item that the price might be up there.  Total price was 12 bucks; 10 for the book and 2 for shipping!  He could no doubt make more on the books but this certainly tells what kind of guy Roger is!  Thanks Ryan for helping me out!

That man has probably forgot more than most "experts" ever knew about trophy whitetails. I'd love to spend some time with him but I wouldn't even know where to start with questions so I'd probably just sit and listen and hope he doesn't shut up!

Roger is a wealth of information on whitetails and hunting in general.  That's probably the best $12 bucks you've spent in a while.

I agree that Roger is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to bowhunting a lot of big game animals.  He has taken some very nice black bears over the years too and his trophy room is second to none.  I and my brother Chirs have been very fortunate to spend some time in camps with Roger and with Ryan, a great traditional family.

I have met Roger a few times over the years and he is in my opinion a legend. A common man, the same as you or me that lives and breathes whitetail deer. A gentleman to the core and shuns no person. He invented a great broadhead also, thr snuffer.

i also have been fortunate to cross paths with roger.i was in iowa checking out some hunting areas after drawing a nr tag before season and stopped in to say hello.he invited me to stay at his home for a couple nights which also included monday night football and pizza.he also gave me some shooting lessons and also took me to a couple of his treestand setups and gave me a firsthand explanation of why they were there.there isn't a more down to earth guy than roger rothaar and i have more respect for him and his acomplishments than all the other so-called professional hunters you see on tv put together.

I agree with Green Valley Gobbler---I think Roger is a great guy and his two books are my favorites when it comes to archery and hunting.

I've been fooled an awful lot by Big Bucks out in the woods, but I have been fooled a few times LESS after studying "In Pursuit of Trophy Whitetails".  And every Early Fall I pull out the "Magic" book and read it again.  Gets me all fired up.  And Its getting close to that time as we speak.

I'd like to see some photos of his Iowa Whitetails---he doesn't seem to seek publicity but it would be neat to see some of the big boys he has good luck with out there.

A truly great guy.  My family stopped in on him, un-announced years back in Ohio.  He came to the door, invited us in, talked bowhunting, showed me all the bucks in his first book and then got out a projector and showed me his home made film of his Canadian bear hunt!  That was a very special day for me indeed.

I've read Roger's books several times over the years, he is someone I would like to meet.

Green gobbler, glad you had a good visit!  Saves me from hearing the stories again if he has someone else to tell them to. Just be careful if you ever stop by the farm...he'll follow you to the truck.  They don't get much company in Iowa!

Dad has pretty much dropped out of the limelight since moving to Iowa.  He has talked at Compton a couple times, and a couple state organizations, but now its mainly just hunt deer, raise deer, hunt deer, raise deer etc etc.  He generally shoots a couple 160 class bucks every year, just doesn't send pictures in to all of the magazines.
