New To Traditional Archery..Need Arrow Help
« on: July 29, 2011, 10:48:00 AM »
I am a recent convert from compound to tradtional archey. I recently purchased a TD recurve from Andy McCoy(wife does not know yet)that is 62" 56#@28" I am actually drawing 29"  I realize this adds about 3#'s. I will likely need arrows in the 30"-31" range. I am looking for advice on an arrow combo that will work without me having to do major research and test shooting. My carbon Maxima's used for my 70# compound are cut to 29" and are too short. I have over 2-Dz new Easton 2413's that I bought years ago. Will these work? I appreciate any advice.

The 2413's sound like they would be too stiff a spine and too lightweight for a traditional bow.For an aluminum arrow I would look at a 2117 or 2216,they are plenty long enough and have enough physical weight.Try to cut them about 31" and try points from 125 gr. to 175 gr.Try shooting them bare first to see how they fly, that would give you an indication if there going to fly good.Carbons I prefer to do alittle more tuning until I get the correct dynamic spine I'm looking for. They are a different animal.

I'm not an expert in any way, but Beman MFX Classic 400 should be the correct spine, just buy one full length and see how it shoots, you can easily shorten a little at a time and experiment with different weight up front. when you are satisfied, order the rest. If you have access to an archery shop, you can do it there, it only takes a minute to cut it down while you wait. then shoot again, I like to have someone stand behind me to watch the arrow flight, gives me a second opinion and I can focus on form rather than trying to watch the arrow.

If that TD has a shelf cut to center you could go with the 2117's cut to 29.75" bop (from nock groove to (B)ack (O)f (P)oint and 145gr tips. That would give you 9 grains per pound of draw weight. Nine is considered to be the minimum for the well being of the bow. Some 2216 cut to 29.75" bop with 175gr tips would result in 8.8 gpp. Some 2216's cut to 29.75" bop with 175gr tips would give you 9.5 gpp. I would go with the 2216's if you wanted more tip weight and the 2117's if you wanted less. With a 29" draw length the 29.75" bop would work good.

Andy, what hardtimes said. I shoot 400 axis full lenght out of a 56lb recurve. I shoot 200 grain heads and they work good for me. I draw 28 1/2. You might need to go with a lighter head, but if you been shooting a compound for a while, I think you'll be fine. my take on it has been that most compound shooters that are good shots, have no problem with stickbows once they get past the , no let off. You'll do fine. I may need your help soon. Just got a ez7 at a deal. Haven't shot wheels since 86. DB

Also Stu Miller's dynamic spine calculator helps save some time and is just plain fun to mess around with, google it and you will find it pretty easy   :)

Hummm.................. First thought of mine is 60# pull for a person who is new to traditional archery.........I am not sure about what the proper arrow will or will not be but. That is alot of weight to start out with. Good luck.

I appreciate everyone's help and the fast responses. There is much more to arrow selection than I ever thought there would be. Makes you appreciate traditional even more. I guess I have my work cut out for me. I looked at the spine calculator mentioned.  It does give me a good starting popint.  Thanks again "All" for your help.

jamesh76,
I had the same concern when I oredered the bow. I was actually surprised at how smooth the bow shoots. Much nicer than the 52" 50# recurve I was shooting. Thanks and stay safe on the streets!

Thanks Andy,

Most people have issues with heavy weight starting out. Not all though. Good luck.

btw the 52" bow was probably not very smooth because of your long draw length. Some short bows are ok. Some not. It was probably stacking on you and maybe giving some finger pinch also.

Careful with the calculator my arrows and bow are off by almost 20 pounds. My form might be that horrible but my arrows fly like darts even though they are supposed to be way overspined. Chris

I agree with not beleiving in the calculator for choices!

To many variables in this day of archery and bowhunting.

Andy, I would give those 2413 a try. No harm, yes stiff, but may suprise ya! Put some heavy pt. weight on 'em.

Like said, the 2117, and 2216, might be a better choice in alum.

If you can get to a shoot with alot of "real bow shooters", ask to try some arrows thru your bow. Most folks are obliging, to let ya shoot 'em

Frank, Stu's calculator says those 2117's and 2216's would work good for him. It actually says they would be a better choice just like you said.

Snag, David. I'm sure they would, from my "experience" and the manufactures recomendations.

Been shooting this size since late '80s. I do shoot 55-60lbs. But then we didn't have the variety of sizes in those days.

I have also read of folks who followed these calculators and had problems!

YOU still have to shoot the shaft! I have a slide calculator from the early 90's that Easton put out, and most of those shafts , Lites, are obosolete.

I'm frugal in alot of ways and always will side on the interest of finances!

Andy did say the "Accountant" didn't know!
