Limb Twist
« on: August 01, 2011, 08:11:00 PM »
I recently purchased a recurve bow that was built by a local bowyer.

After shooting the bow quite a bit over the past few weeks, I began to notice a slight twist in the upper limb.

The twist is very slight and only noticable if you look down the belly side of the bow and see that the string is slightly misaligned with the string groove.

I have tried several techniques to permanently straighten the limb (i.e. heated with hot water, twisted manually etc.) and although the limb comes back into alignment fairly easily, after several days the slight twist in the upper limb seems to reappear.

Any of you bowyers out there got any ideas?

Am I stuck with a permanently flawed limb or is there something simple I can do to remedy the situation?

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

To fix it permanently, the bowyer will have to remove material from the strong side of the twist.  If this changes the tiller of the bow too much, he will have to remove material from the opposite limb.  So your bow will come back a little lighter in draw weight.  Hopefully, it won't be enough to matter.

Definitely talk to to your bowyer.... This is the first thing you should always do. Taking matters into your own hands and trying to straighten the limb yourself could void the warranty.

Sometimes it's as simple as a string notch slightly off center, or not shaped correctly. I've done that one before myself not getting a perfect tear drop shape. ....  Kirk
