Arrow Help
« on: August 02, 2011, 07:41:00 PM »
Hi all. This is my first post on Trad Gang.

I'm looking into ordering a dozen new arrows and I wanted to run it by some more experienced shooters before I plop down the cash.

This is what I got: 62" Pearson recurve 45# @ 28"   30" draw and ff string.

I'm looking at the Traditional Only arrows from three rivers with 50 grain insert tipped with 135 grain Zwickey.  I want to leave the arrows full length which is 32" I believe.

From what I've looked at this setup puts me right on the line with either a 300 or 340 in that arrow.  So any suggestions on what I should go with, and does this sound like a pretty good setup?

I would say a 400 would work better maybe even a 500,you are drawing around 51# at your draw.A 300 or 340 would be too stiff for that draw weight unless you really loaded up the front end with more weight. You are shooting a FF string on the Pearson, can the bow handle a FF string. Is this an older recurve, they usally take a dacron string, just wondering.

Nope, get the 500 spine and you will be close with the full length and 185 up front, if ya need a tad more weight up front foot them with aluminum. 340 Spine are shot out of 65 plus pound bows with lots of point weight. ex. I shoot a 500 spine out of 54# recurve at my 28.5" draw cut to 29"s and 175 grains of point weight. Because you are shooting full length shafts and drawing 30"s, so 51#s or so I think you will be right in the ball park. Is this the new Pearson bow, if so than you may get away with a tad bit less point weight, but definitely not the 300s or even the 340s. The 400s would be OK full lenght but you will need lots of weight up front. More like 275-325 grains. Shawn

If it's an older Pearson you may want to confirm if it's FF compatable.

I think the 500 spine would be the better choice. I don't think they could be too stiff, and that leaves you wiggle room to bump your point weight up or down to change your forward of center percentage, or to add weight and cut them down if you change your mind. I've always steered to the weaker choice. It just gives me a little more room to play with weight and length. Its a lot easier to me to make an arrow stiffer than to make one weaker without causing negative effects. *Check on the Fast Flight compatibility like the other gentlemen have said. I cracked a tip on my first bow with a Fast Flight string and it just so happened to be an old Pearson Spectre. Enjoy shooting it I loved my Pearson!

I would go with the 400 spine at that weight.

I'm glad I asked cause I was way off. Thanks for the help.

As for the string, it had ff when I bought it. I asked the man I bought it from about and he said that's what he always used. I've been shooting it now for 3 years with no problems, but I'm definately going to look into it.

took the liberty of running your numbers through Stu's calculator. I also have a 30" draw and shoot long carbons. Notice I have your BOP at 32" which means you would need to cut the nock length difference off the arrow. Your string selection and strike plate thickness (I used 1/8) will make a difference too.

good luck

So is the spine calculator shwoing 340 to be correct?

I was thinking 340 due to the chart that is in the three rivers catalog.

Kninja, I think with your long draw at this poundage I would shoot the .400 spine although the .340's would work.  I draw 31" and my recurves around 50# and longbows (not cut to center) up to 60# I shoot .370-.400 spine with 145-200 up front.  My recurves at 58-65# I shoot .300-.340 with the same point weight as above.  If you truly draw 30" and shoot 32" arrows then you will need more spine than a lot of what you read on here, .400 will kind of be a minimum for you and getting the high FOC with 300gr+ up front is not really feasible.  Long draw is a blessing for the power but you will find it limits you with arrow and bow selection.  Good luck....Shawn

Thanks a lot. I went ahead and ordered the 400's. My friend just got the exact same bow I have, and fortunately he's a big guy too. He draws almost 30" shooting my bow. So maybe they'll work out for both of us, and he can get going a little quicker being brand new to traditional shooting.
