how the heck did this happen?

Well i have been trying to get my brace height and nock height set on my new Hill Country K-2.  So this morning I had a little time to shoot and still couldn't get it down.  Well i ran out of time and figured that I would move my nock up to 7/8" and then put the bow down until later and try again.  

Well..... when I got home I found my bow laying on the garage floor, with one end or the string touching the garage door and the other laying on top of the dryer about 20 feet apart.the string broke just below the bottom of the serving.  I checked the limbs and they seem to be okay.

my bow rack has two posts to let every bow lay parallel( horizontally ) to each other, and I had the limbs resting on the wood posts.  the string didn't show any signs of wear that I noticed when I was shooting it.  

Do I have anything to worry about as far as this damaging my bow in any way, or would the damage be obvious?   I found a small nick in the clear on one limb but it looks minor.  my garage is attached to my house so it is not hot in there?  I just dont know how this happened.

Just guessing here, maybe whoever made the string nicked it when they cut the tag end of the serving off. How many strand string was it?

You may have nicked it with the nock pliers (assuming it wasn't a tied on nock)??
But yea, 6 strands is awfully thin.  I use 16 strands min. and have never had one brake.

Sure hope your bow is okay,  that is a nice shootin stick!  Six strands sounds awfully thin. Hope it all works out for you.  Nice to meet you at denton,  FUDD

Yeah, a string with only 6 strands of anything is crazy thin.  The nock crimp may have pinched the fibers to weaken them until constant stress and fiber stretch took its toll.  With such few strands, it may have been inevitable even with a tie-on nock.  Give the bow a lookover, but I wouldn't worry about it much.  Make sure the new string is beefier.

I had the same thing happen with a 6 strand string that wasn't too old.I don't care how many guys use them w/o problems-no more skinny strings for me.

I've had 16 Strand break while tuning with brass nocks, everytime you move and reset the nock you damage the strands. 6-8 strands are more than enough. Tie on nocks I never have a problem, I shoot a 6 strand and love it.

I have never tied a nock on, is it a hard thing to do, and what material should I use.  dou you use a brass nock till you get it tuned, or just stick with the string material?  

Im sure that it is something that I did to damage the string, I moved the nock quite a few times to get it shooting right, so that probably had something to do with it.  

Bob are you going to be at the eastern Ohio shoot next weekend.

I never use brass or any metal nocks. I will use masking tape as temp. nocks to tune. Normally I tie on nock and twist it to adjust height, once I have it where I want it I tie on another nock real tight or superglue nock once it is where you want it.
I don't do any Ohio shoots. Always use 2 nocks, one above one below..

thanks bob, I would be so lost without all the great people on here to help me out.  I will give it a shot the masking tape is a great idea. i am going to give it a shot tomorrow. thanks again bob.

On a similar note - is 10 strands of D-97 enough for a 55lb bow pulled to 25"

Agree with Bob 100% 6 strands is plenty, Maybe when the maker burnt the excess serving tag end it heated the string and damaged it or they nicked it when cutting excess! Shawn

Best advice from Bob, Learn to tie your knocks. I believe that the weight of the metal knock takes off about 3 fps of bow speed if my memory serves me correctly. I am also relatively sure that with lighter strand strings that the weight of the knock and the action it causes on the shot breaks down the string. When you see slow motion pics of a bow and string after the shot you will understand that it goes through tremendous forces. With the string tied knock that problem is eliminated. I would thaink that the string nock would not be the cause if the string did indeed break below the bottom of the serving.
