Western Nebraska for a self guided deer Hunt

Hello, just wondering how Western Nebraska is for a do it yourself Deer hunt. I love what I have seen of that country but never really had the chance to talk to anyone who has hunted there. How is public land access, getting a tag, deer numbers etc. Any chance of for an antelope as well. Thanks.

Apply for tags on July 11th. And speed goats sell out rather quickly.  I go back to the family ranch every year to hunt Muleys.  Best bet is to take a family trip and start knocking on doors.

Archery tags are over the counter - and available3 on-line.  The Gilbert Baker area is public hunting in northwest Nebraska. Been 40+ years since I've hunted that area.  Get on line and look at the Nebraska Game and Parks website.  They show all the public hunting areas in the state - then call their Alliance office and talk to one of the biologists, they should be able to provide some guidance.  Good luck . . .

I lived at Crawford for a number of years.  Plenty of public land for deer hunting, both WT and mule deer.  Prairie is good for spot and stalk.  When I was there in the '80's and 90's bowhuntiing on private land was not that hard to arrange, but times have changed and many places I used to hunt  have gone to some form of pay hunbting. Which is not necessarily bad, just different from "the sunny slopes of long ago."
It is great country and possibly better hunting than when I was there.

You won't be disappointed if you make the trip, There's 1000's of acres of public land. Tags for Goats,Deer and turkey are all OTC you will also have a good chance of seeing Bighorns and Elk. All of the WMA's are walk-in only which helps with the crowds.

I hunted a place in NW NE. this year for antelope.  It was a semi-guided hunt on a 50,000 acre ranch that is one mile from Wyoming border and 3 miles from South Dakota border.  I saw a lot of antelope and some nice mule deer, but I did not connect on this trip.  Two of the guys in camp had friends hunting the public Oglala grasslands and both shot doe antelope.  I am considering going back and hunting public.  The tags can be purchased on-line for $155 for antelope.

My uncle lives in Scotts Bluuf, there is some nice public areas around him. You'll see mostly Colorado plates in the parking areas.

Western reservoirs are seriously under hunted by the residence, however they get a fair amount of pressure from the Colorado crowd.. Some excellent whitetails come off of them as well as the occasional muley
