New Arrows Need Some Help
« on: August 18, 2011, 04:59:00 PM »
Hi, I currently have carbon arrows and want to switch to wooden arrows. I'm shooting Carbon Express Heritage 150's with a 125gr tip. There 31" long without the nock or point. My draw length is 26.5" pulling 45lbs. I was wondering if any of you guys have any suggestions on what arrows and broadheads are good for hunting and where is a good place to order some. Thanks for all your help.

Russ

It would be helpful to know the specs on your bow:
bows draw weight
bows draw length
shelf cut to: + or - center
bow manufacturer/ model
string material

Just from what you've stated here you have been shooting the 150's which have an equivalent spine weight of 64+ lbs to a wood shaft. That's why you have to leave them 31", plus you're only using 125gr tips. More than likely your bow is 45#@28"...stop me if I'm wrong. That would mean you're only pulling about 40#@26".
With more info. on the bow you're shooting we can get you headed in the right direction for wood arrows.

Bows Draw Weight-45lbs
Bows Draw Length-Has to be 26.5"? I marked my arrow and checked the scale and it was 45lbs at 26.5" unless the scale was wrong.
Shelf cut to-Not sure what that means.
Bow Manufacturer-PSE
Model-Blackhawk Recurve
String Material-Not sure about my current string because I bought it at bass pro shops but I just bought a spool of B-50 that's going to be my new string

Thanks for helping me out David

How is the bow marked as far as draw weight and draw length? I see your draw length is 26.5"...but how was the bow built? How the shelf is cut means does the string line up with the strike plate or is the shelf not cut in far enough to have the string line up with it.

You are close to my specs.
My wood arrows are tapered Ash, Douglas Fir, or Sitka Spruce. I cut them to 28", and the spine is usually 45-50#.

I shoot mostly hybrid longbows, built on the speedy side, but also have a lot of recurves of various makes and vintages.

Ash is very heavy, which makes it a good killing arrow. It also makes the arrow trajectory more of a rainbow. I have come to like Douglas Fir a lot, as it is a happy medium in the weight department, and is easy to work with.

Kelly Petersen from arrows by Kelly used to have the best wood arrow chart around. I beleive he would add 10-15#s of spine to bows weight at your draw for a recurve and around 10#s for a high performance lonbow, than based this on a 28" arrow back of point. I would say that 55-60# woodie 28"s bop with a 125 grain head would be about perfect. I would also say that a carbon spined .600 cut to 29"s with 225 grains of point weight would be very close. Most anyone on the sponsor classified who sells woodies would be a good choice. If you send me your addy I have some ash that may work for you. I will cut them to 28"s and fletch them up for ya as well, no need to pay me, just pay it forward one day. I have a half dozen or so, I believe they may work for ya. Shawn

The draw weight is marked as 45lbs and I read somewhere online that they are rated at 28" but some guy at an archery shop that sold me the carbon arrows told me I was pulling 50lbs. Today I went to my archery clubs scale and figured out I was pulling 45lbs at 26.5". I think the shelf lines up with the string if I understand what you're saying.

Ya I got it, thanks Shawn you didn't have to do that. Are they ready to fly or do I need to put them together.

I was looking at these arrows  http://www.raptorarchery.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=109_150&products_id=465  , do you think they would be good with 125gr or 160gr and a length of 30"
