how are these numbers??
« on: August 20, 2011, 09:18:00 PM »
I just chrono'd a bow that i built and got these numbers

535 gr @ 154 fps
470 gr @ 178 fps

are these numbers respectable??? i don't really care but just like to know... This is a 54 in bow by the way if it matters.

Thanks Guys

For a bow that is only 54" in length and 53#, it's respectable with regards to feet per second speed since your limbs are short. I'm also guessing your draw length is short as well.

Well, short draw ans short limbs, that would seem to be acceptible, depending on the style of bow you made.  No matter, you built it, shoot it and enjoy!!  By the way, for deer hunting I would encourage you to use a 2 blade broad head like a Stos.  Also your heavier arrow yeilds about .366 sluggs of momentum force while the lighter arrow yields .371 sluggs of force.  The lighter arrow sounds like you best choice as a hunting arrow in my opionion.

Any pics of your bow?

i don't mean to hyjack this thread, but does the length of the bow effect the speed as much as the design?

I think they are OK.
One thing I am wondering about is the big difference in speed for just 65 grains? Its a difference in speed with 79 fps! I think thats a lot, but maybe your bow liked the 470 grain arrow better, spine vice!

Congrats with a nice bow:)
With a healthy dose of madness and bad memory, life`s a wonderful journey

I don't see where the 79 fps come from, I chronoed my favorite bow and got higher numbers without as much spread as that with a shorter draw. I don't trust them for accuracy, so my higher numbers don't mean much, but I only got a 16 fps spread with arrows that were 60 grains apart with my bow. Personally, I  would use the faster arrow for deer unless your throwing a shovel sized broadhead out there with your arrow.

i chronoed my hunting bow on friday, it's a 58" hybrid longbow, and it pulls about 52.5lbs at my 26.75" draw. it shot a 600grain carbon 163 on average, i shot about 20 times. then just for fun we shot a 450 grain arrow through her to see what she would do and averaged 191. i shot the bow i got from the bow trade on the bowyers bench as well. it's a hybrid osage self-bow with a draw weight of 65#@28", and it shot almost exactly the same speeds. this isn't really relavant to the thread, but it was kinda neat.

Sweeet eman , a longer limb bow will be faster than a short limb bow (more leverage - more speed) I shot my bow against a 58 in bow and it was about the same as mine.... However it was late and I don't know how accurate these numbers are.... Athens huh.... If you ever find ur self in nw ga let me know

I shoot a 62 inch recurve 44#@28  a 475 grain arrow and get 156 fps.

Like you said it doesn't much matter, the important thing is hitting where you look.
