Bush N a Bag or Ghillie

Hey Folks. I'm planning on hunting on the ground as a priority this year. I've researched some posts but would you prefer a Bush N a Bag or a Ghillie (or a leafy suit). I'm leaning towards the Bush because I fear the Ghillie will be too hot for early season. I appreciate your input.

I've got a bush-n-a-bag and a leafy suit (not a ghillie). I got the leafy suit some 20 years ago and have killed a lot of critters with it over the years. Most of the time I just wear the top.  

The bush-n-a-bag is very good camo, but I have a hard time shooting with it on. It's not the arm so much as the chest.  I use a 69" bow and the chest catches on my bow string.  I'd really like to use it, I just need to figure out how to keep the chest in tight to my body.

My leafy suit does work just about as well, though, and it's much easier to shoot out of.  There's no need to take it on and off. It's mesh underneath, so in the heat, I can wear a dark tee shirt under it.

I have had used (and still do) a leafy suit from Cabelas.  It is mesh and after some trimming, I can shoot my 68 inch bow with it pretty well.  I have had deer feeding 3 yards from me ... honestly.  Man it is cool to hear them breathing and cracking acorns ... at your feet!  I always try to breath through my nose when deer are near.  I thnk the breath thing is what gets us busted more than anything (my opinion).  

Bush in a bag may be better to hide in, leafy suit may be better to shoot from.

I just got a bush suit as well and it looks like I'll definitely need to use a bino harness to keep the chest area clear of the bow string.

the crooked horn outfitters bino harness works very well at keeping the suit tight to the chest. You can use it with or without the binoculars hooked on.

That's what I do. I got mine from Big Jim and love it. Worked great on the turkeys in the spring.

I've been doing a lot of research on ground hunting camo and I finally decided on an ASAT 3D leafy suit.   The reports are excellent and you can get the pants, jacket and headcover for around $135.  

I think I looked at every Ghillie out there and I read a ton of reviews on them and while I don't doubt their effectiveness it seemed to me that they all had issues that most guys were dissatisfied with.   And, oddly, most of the reviewers that I read championed the ASAT product.

I have no experienced based preference but by October I should.

I have a bush-in-the-bag and find it to be quite noisy when I draw. I can't imagine being able to draw on a deer at less than 20 yds without it hearing me. Unless wind is strong. Any suggestions?  Maybe Jimbow?

Kpete, wash it several times and it will soften right up.

Make sure you dry it in the dryer too. this will help to soften it. If you have a few tennis balls or shoes, throw them in the dryer with the poncho.

The best looking ghille suit that I think I have seen is the one that Mark Anthony came up with.  By the way...Mark has killed 6 booners on the ground and he hunts ground similar to what 99% of us hunt with other people.  I believe he designed it...and I think Bush in a Bag makes it.  You can see it at  www.marcanthonyoutdoors.com

I just ordered a Bush-n-a-bag from Big Jim the other day.  When I get it in I will let you know what I think. It seems to be the best one to use during bow season in the south when it is still warm.  I am wondering what is the best way to use one during gun season.  Just wear an orange cap with it?

I got my Bush in a Bag from Big Jim today.  I just have to say that it was a great price and fast shipping.  I played around with it some this afternoon and with a few modifications I think it should work really well.  It was a little warm to wear but it was only in the 90's today so I think that will not be a factor in deer season. It is quite noisy out of the box but I believe Jim when he says to wash it a few times.  The biggest problem that I had was the string slapping the sleeve on it.  This is an easy fix.  I took a sleeve off of an old shirt and an arm guard and that solved the problem.  The place your string will hit is under the arm and on one side of the chest.  I did not have a binocular strap but I took some shock chord with a locking slide and put it under my arm and around my chest.  After this there was no problems when shooting.  Later I tried the same thing with the shock chord on my arm.  I have not tested it with my bow but with two pieces of shock chord on my upper arm and an arm guard I do not think I will have a problem shooting.  I will also probably trim some leaves on the inside of my bow arm.  I am 5' 11" and I can probably cut about 6" off of the bottom of the poncho.  I plan on using this material camo a boonie hat because I do not like using a face mask.  I don't have any real experience with the bush in a bag yet but it seems like it will do the job.  Hopefully I can post a picture of a deer that I shoot while wearing it!
