Mediterranean olive wood bows or veneers?
« on: August 23, 2011, 02:26:00 PM »
Hello there, I was looking for a bowyer to make me a T/D 2-piece longbow on my trip home (medical reasons), but the time frame is just too short, so I'm going to order one instead and wait it out.
Anyway, in honor of my mom's fight with the big 'C' (darn...) I decided on olive wood limb veneers (her favorite wood).

Anyone want to show me your bow with Mediterramean olive wood (not Russian olive, a completely different, unrelated tree)?
Also: bowyers, could I get a lam and bring it home for my mom to sign? Would that work?
Thanks!
Marco

Mediterranean olive is a very beautiful wood.  After experimentation with it, Bob Morrison has determined that it is not strong enough to use as the main component of a riser.  I don't imagine there would be any problem using it as a limb veneer.  On the other hand, using it as a working lam within the limb might not be advisable.

The reason I know this is that I ordered a riser made from mediterranean olive from Bob, and he called me and recommended that I use a different wood.  I'm delighted with the wood choices we ended up with, which are nothing like mediterranean olive.  Since I like mediterranean olive as much as your mother does, I guess I'll have to look for something else made from it where strength is not such an important factor.

Ah, thanks Dave... good to know. Limb veneer it will be, then.

I love olivewood also. I received some from a man in Jerusalem. Had some of it used in the tip overlays of the last Blacktail Norm built for me.

You might talk to Big Jim. He shows an olive sample on his website. His t/d 2 piece Thunderchild is a work of art.
