well, stated my long trex just had a total knee replacement done.  So, got home the other day and started catching up and watching hunting shows.  first, i am not slamming then nor saying they suck.  I have videoed my own and understand how hard it is.  And they do promote the sport of hunting.  But what happened?  What happened to a show where a guy/gal goes out and enjoys the hunt?  The only challenge is of themselves?  enjoying nature?  Hunting game more than just on ranches and using special one of a kind equipment?  Seeing a person stalk, and get busted and laugh at themselves.  Seeing the ethics of passing on "big buck" for an ethical shot on a tasty doe.  Obviously, I should get some credintials and money and try and put a show on like the ole Bear show or the few Byron tried.

I think like any other type of show there are a very few that are good, a few more that are OK, and the vast majority are garbage. Chris

First off I'd like to say that there isn't enough shows on TV that promote Traditional Hunting. So we are stuck watching wheel bow hunting shows. That don't matter too much because acrchery hunting is pretty cool to me even if the hunter chooses to use training wheels on their bow.

IMHO The hunting shows we watch on TV are paid for by sponsers who provide their equipment to the people on the shows to hunt with. No big surprise they are having the show's host push the sponser's products after all thats just business.

Although I understand "business" the things I can't stand is watching a hunting show where the format is a team competition type of setting. Hunting to me is not a competition between my hunting buddies but something to enjoy and look forward to just to be out in nature and observing what God put on this Earth and the joy and comradary of sharing our failures and successes in the woods. Just being together sharing the experiance is what I love about hunting. It's not about the kill.

Another thing I can't stand is watching a hunter make a bad shot on an animal and then celebrate it like they scored the last minute winning touchdown in the Super Bowl. I'd rather see the hunter say to the audiance that they made a poor shot(poor shots are a part of hunting no matter how much we practice) and just show us what they have to do to track and finally put the animal out of it's misery.

The last thing I can't stand about hunting shows is seeing the hunter whoop and hollar like a damnd fool obviously putting on a "show" just because the camera is in their face.Hey morons how about showing some respect for the animal you just shot?

Any way these are just my opinions I hope I don't tick off any one here for sharing them.

I watched one a week ago that had a 10/22 modified to shoot a arrow. He took a shot with it at 75 yds. with a broadhead and centerpunched the target.

I'm not a fan of many of the hunting shows, just a couple. In fact, I won't buy certain products if they are pushed by certain hosts. I've even called manufacturers to see if they carried a version of the product without the host's name or nick-name.

Having written this. I had an experience this summer working with a host of a show that shall go unnamed.  This fellow set out to depict certain things. Then he went after sponsors. I was amazed how difficult it was for him to get sponsors. How so many say sure thing, check's in the mail, etc. But this fellow didn't cave and go for sponsors that didn't fit his objective or ethics.

I'm sure most are simply shills for whoever pays the bills, but not all of them. Many sponsors care more about the personality than the person.

I've lost interest in most of the shows due to too much corporate advertising slathered throughout the shows and complete inundation during commercial breaks. Basically most current "hunting" shows are like commercials that never stop.

i understand the business end of it.  But when a guy carries out a product on the show and say he couldn't of done it with out it, (a peice of hunting clothes), give me a break.  Surely, there are enough sponsors with ethics and bowhunters who believe in the product who would use the product and just show the hunt, instead of steer the filming to prove how spraying this stuff here worked and no other way could it of been done.  Just once, wouldn't it be nice to see a guy walk out of "public property" see two guys tracking deer and offer to help.  I believe they all start with good intentions but end up getting comsumed by the corporations and money.  What a shame.

Yep, there must be a crowd out there that wants this stuff.  Othewise sponsors aren't savvy enough to spend their marketing money wisely.

I have a strong feeling the folks here on Trad Gang are a poor barometer of what the majority of hunters want to see on television.

I used to watch everything I could find, about 10 years or so ago. I even bought the first 9-10 sets of "Monster Bucks" videos.  Now I can't stand the shows. I suspect my maturity as a bowhunter has more to do with my opionion of these shows than the quality of the shows?  

I definitely expect the overall age of bowhunters to start going down (younger and more numerous)more and more over the next few years. I doubt I'm the target of these shows these days. They probably couldn't care less what I think of em.

I don't believe that the people that watch the majority of these shows are very experienced outdoorsman and hunters. Most of the shows are so far from the reality of hunting that they are virtual fantasy. Not to mention that a lot of the products that are shilled on these shows as, "must have" gear, are overpriced junk, most if not all mech broadheads immediately come to mind. Chris
