who is using the "ilf" bow set-ups??
« on: August 25, 2011, 12:16:00 PM »
I am REALLY struggling..... I LOVE trad archery. I have an awesome longbow (deathwish, boo, FAST)
beautiful Super Kod ('69 50#), ORIG red wing hunter (48# diamoind back skins, shoots 100%)

I just bought a couple target bows with the idea of getting into target archery, maybe field archery???

I am seriously thinking about getting a ilf riser and soing the all-in-one thing. I am bow broke and would have to sell off my "herd" to afford anything now, but I am not oppossed to doing that, BUT I am not sure what I want to do. I have a habit of buying /selling. Once I get "what I want", I find myself "searching"

anyone else like this??

what do ya think of the ilf system??

thanks for your help!!!!!!

i go thru periods like you describe:) my problem has always been that i have to sell one thing to afford another...good thing my wife just started working as a registered nurse, 2 weeks ago!! i think i will finally be able to have a rack full of bows:)

but about the ilf system...to me its the greatest thing since sliced bread. i have a morrison mini 13" along with a set of short black max limbs and a set of longbow limbs. its nice being able to tune the bow to the arrow you want to shoot( or have a surplus of). i use to be under the impression that it was too complicated and too much stuff to fiddle with but really it can be as simple or as technical as you want it to be.

I shoot ILF, metal risered target and hunting bows, custom wood takedowns, and one piece recurves.
Shoot whatever you shoot best. Or whatever you like shooting the most. I'm sure I'd be more accurate with a compound with sights but I enjoy shooting recurves more. So I do! All kinds of recurves. Keep searching, its part of the fun.
Archery is a blast, don't kid yourself thinking "this will be my last bow"...you will undoubtedly shoot hundreds more. You'll find a way.

I am a big, I shoot wood risers and metal. I just like the fact there are a ton of limb options. I also will say you do not need to sell off your "herd" of bows to get started. You can find a used riser and a very nice set of limbs used for around $300. I found a Belcher/Sky riser with 2 sets of limbs for $310 bucks. I sold one set of limbs for $100, so $210 and it is a sweet set-up. You can buy a very good set of used limbs for 100-150 bucks and paint them black and a used riser for as little as $100. Look around, I am sure you will like it. My Dryad riser and ilf limbs are as traditional as any T/D bow out there.  Shawn

As Shawn says, you can by used bows and pieces one at a time, so no real need to sell off too much.  I have two risers and 3 sets of limbs, and I don't think I have $450 in the whole bunch.  I can make anything from a 32# 68" target bow to a 55# 64" hunting bow with a lot of options in between.  New Hoyt risers can be had for under $200 and TradTech Black Max limbs start at about $130, so for the price of a Bear Grizzly you can have the beginning of a really versatile setup.
55# 56" Bear Black Panther
52# 66" Hoyt Gold Medalist
42# 58" Bear Kodiak Hunter
45# 62" Pearson Colt
50# 66" Root Rangemaster
45# 64" Bear Kodiak

I have both, i know my ilf bow can be changed but I don't ever change limbs. Makes it nice tuning, but once it's tuned you probably want change it any. Kinda like a take down that never gets taken down.

Red4arm,me to. I got a few ILF set-ups,and they stay that way. Thats just what I do. I enjoy the
OPTION of switch-a-roo,but rarely do unless something gets sold to buy something else. My
newest ILF rig is a Morrison 13" riser,ACS longbow bamboo cored limbs with Eastern Diamondback skins done by Bob Morrison. I chronoed it today a bunch. 198-203fps. at 48lbs.
redeemed,ILF is a whole bunch of fun!!

why is there an adjustment to these ilf bows???

is there that much difference in the two -three pound ya can gain or what??

can't ya just bolt the limbs on crank down the limb bolts?

You can adjust the weight, tiller and alignment of the limbs. Pretty substantial adjustments and can really help your tuning. I am shooting a titan now and really want to try a wood riser ilf, been drooling over some dryads, and some longbow limbs, it is a real sickness. Chris

In my case, 2-3# change can make a big difference my accuracy. Some days things hurt more than others and backing off a couple pounds can mean the difference in hitting my spot or missing 6 inches. Crank it up to practice to help maintain strength, adjust to where your most accurate. Tuning is a breeze..

I just got my first Morrison ILF riser, and it is great!!! I say my first, because I will defiantly get another.  I like that I can adjust the poundage and it just shoots really well. oh almost forgot to mention that it is VERY quiet!!

I hope you don't mind me asking a question on Redeemed's thread. Is there a difference between a ilf wood riser from a ilf metal one.

Besides the feel and one might be colder to the touch. Is one more forgiving, more precise in adjustments, and will the weather effect one more then the other. Thank you for your response.

I Like the metal risers better. They are bomb proof, and seem to balance well, and you can get different grips for them to find exactly what fits you.  I have small hands, and this is a big plus for me.

I might change my mnd if I shot one, but all this talk of adjusting poundsge, tiller, etc.. reminds me too much of my compound days. And I am not disparaging anyone using them or saying anyone isn't trad enough.

pdk25 I hope you get the chance to get one in your hands sometime. I thought the same thing.
Once you take one apart, and see how it all works
you may come to the same conclusion I did. It's
just a more effective form of a takedown that uses standardized attachment hardware so you can
switch/transfer riser and limb configurations from multiple bowyers/manufacturers because the
attachment is universal.

I have heard this before but don't really understand it. An ILF bow is just another type of takedown and if you don't want to fiddle with the adjustments you certainly don't have to once it is tuned. An ILF is for sure a modern design but in my mind no more modern than any glass backed takedown with phenolic riser inlays and tip overlays, or perhaps carbon fiber.  Chris

EDIT: It seems riverrat types faster than I do. LOL

The limb attachment being universal is the real advantage. The tunning is a small advantage. You can make the bottom limb stiffer or weaker to change tiller to get the nock placement where you want.
I built a solid phenolic, black, riser 15 inch and put ilf hardware on it. Heavy riser shoots great with the black max trad tech limbs.
But still prefer the look of wood.
